Is the world today making you depressed and anxious too?

Thursday, May 23, 2019

I had terrible depression as a teenager and it grew throughout my life until menopause, then it diminished. Mine was estrogen based more than from neurotransmitters in my brain. I'm allergic to anti-depression medications, so I found other ways to fight this battle. I go for a walk, I eat healthy, I take St. John's Wart, I write in a journal and I have had a good handle on things for many years. Going back into that deep dark pit is so frightening because once you sink, it is difficult to pull yourself out. Even though I seem to be a very outgoing and social person, I have terrible social anxiety. I've been in theatre for years and have used my acting skills to hide this.

The current world we live in is bringing back much of my depression and heightening my anxieties. Every day the news is filled with crime and hatred. I was raised not to judge someone on their ethnicity, sexual preference, religion, education or social status, but to judge if someone is a good person to others. Our world is filled with racism, hate, sexism, judging someone by who they love or the religion they choose. It feels like a daily struggle to keep my head above water.

I'm a lover of nature, animals, the beach, the mountains, seeing blue skies and fluffy clouds. It's scary how much we have screwed up this beautiful world with pollution, car exhaust, plastic is filling our oceans! Our children and grandchildren will never be able to fix it.

I'm a fixer. I'm the person people come to for advice. Sometimes I am just overwhelmed wanting to do something but there is so much to do. Every day, I try to do something nice for others! I try to help the environment! I encourage people to love each other and try to put yourself in someone else's shoes.

The only thing that has helped is staying in the present! "Breathing in, I calm my body. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment I know this is a wonderful moment." -Thich Nhat Hanh This is what is truly helping me. Meditation and learning to just get through this moment has helped me so much. You can stay present while you are walking, while you are sitting in your room. I take a few moments when I am overwhelmed and just breathe. I breathe in peace and breathe out calm. Within a few breaths, I am back in the present and choose just one thing to work on. I know that there are people that care and are trying to make a difference, I know I can also be one of those people. Just breathe and inspire others is how I can make a difference! Thank you for listening.
