I hit a milestone

Saturday, May 18, 2019

I have been walking daily since July 24, 2011. I started because my doctor suggested that I should walk because it was the best exercise.
I have tracked my walks daily in my notebooks. I decided to do something I thought was totally out of my reach. I started doing a virtual hike of the Appalachian Trail. I found a page on the internet to show mileposts. I finished the first hike. Started a second hike. Finished it. Started a third hike. Finished it. Then walking4fun.com added the Appalachian Trail to their trails. So I started my fourth hike. I finished that.
On November 15, 2017 I started my fifth virtual hike of the Appalachian Trail. I finished it on May 15th 2019. After a couple years of difficulty I finally finished. This was a hard walk for me. I was afraid that I’d never get through.
So I finished on the 15th and started my sixth virtual hike of the Appalachian Trail. It has not been an easy or quick journey. There have been days where .10 mile was a challenge. Some days I managed to get 0.25 miles. Yet through it all I actually hiked on the Appalachian Trail on the Tennessee/North Carolina state line at Carvers Gap. I’ve hiked the Mountain to Sea Trail in North Carolina. I’ve hiked in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina. I never dreamed this would happen. When I got to the top of the first knoll at Carvers Gap I shouted to the world that I did it. That was my very first hike.
Why was this important? Because a few years before I had fallen. When they checked my knee they discovered it hyperextended. The doctor and physical therapy folks told me i’d never walk without a walker. If I did I would have to use a cane.
Needless to say I set out to prove them wrong. It took time. It took determination and a lot of hard work.
Why not find some way to make your walks, hikes, or runs more fun. Track them and have fun.
