Great American Horse Drive - 5-6-19
Monday, May 06, 2019
Technically this isn't in our county, but it's such a big deal in the area I couldn't let it pass without mentioning! Every year Sombrero Ranches do a horse drive in the spring, moving 400+ horses from their winter to summer pastures.
Horse drives are similar to cattle drives with one major difference--- SPEED! Riders from around the world join to drive over 400 horses for a total of 62 miles in the course of two days. They allow the horse herd to lead and follow the pace they set.
Cyndi Marlowe captured how beautiful these animals are:
While Larry Pierce shows part of the crew driving the herd:
Margaret Kottman caught photos of part of the herd:
And Frank Lessiter's photo shows how unique this experience is, participating in a tradition that goes back to 1959:
.Folks come out to the town of Maybell to watch the horses come through - it's impressive!
Lots of local photographers and ranch folks travel over to Moffat County (the next county over) to enjoy this once-a-year experience!
