The Sonora Desert in Arizona is beginning to bloom - wildflowers, prickly pear, and even the saguaros are starting to flower!!!!! Amazing to see such brilliant colors growing out of the dusty grey-green-brown of the desert!
I have memories of plopping down on a prickly pear cactus patch after a long walk on a rural lane outside of my grandparent's 50-acre farm. Lesson learned: look where you are going! It seems it took my grandmother a very long time, using needle nose pliers, to rid me of the needles.
My other grandmother made pear jelly from these and roasted the nuts (seeds). 55 days ago
I wish I knew where my old film photographs of cactus flowers blooming in the Grand Canyon are located! Two friends and I went down the Bright Angel Trail back in May 1980 and I probably took 2 or 3 rolls of film of all the flowers. (If I was going down now, my phone would run out of battery before I could ever get all the photos I wanted to make!). I've always loved the colors of cactus flowers - they seem much more neon and brighter than many other flowers. Feel free to take more photos during the very short blooming season!!
