I Have a Dirty Little Secret--Oh Yeah.

It's time to come clean! I have some dirty laundry and I am finally able to confess! If I can spare one life then perhaps there was some meaning to all of it!

In my last blog I shared I had started a LCHF (low carb-healthy fat) plan for eating. It has been almost three weeks now. In that time, I realized that BEFORE making this lifestyle change-- two things dictated to me. Number one---the clock, even though retired, it should not have any more. After all, I had no one to answer to, right?

No more fire-breathing bosses tyrannizing people. No more setting alarms and getting up long before daylight. And no more rushing through traffic and constantly checking the time! Happy days at last!

Before I began LCHF-I was a gold star clock watcher . emoticon . How come? Well I needed to know when to eat, right? After all, isn't a schedule a good thing? But I will let you in on a dirty secret .... Whenever I left the house. I was convinced I was hypoglycemic and just must keep some kind of food articles with me 24/7. I had nuts in the glove box, and usually a banana or something in case of an emergency!! LOL. Another dirty secret:

This is what my day USED to look like before changing to LCHF:

10:00 a.m. Morning snack (breakfast was around 7:30).
12:00 Noon---Lunch.
2:30 Afternoon snack. (cravings for cottage cheese and ritz crackers)
5:30 Dinner
7:30 Snack--Air popcorn sprinkled with parmesan romano cheese.
(And of course-random-popping things into my mouth).

Dirty--I was a noshing machine!

Now THIS is where it gets down and dirty ... so please try not to laugh or judge too harshly, but if you do, it's ok. I would understand. I actually packed a banana and took it to bed with me. My DH ate his right before he brushed his teeth and slipped into bed. I was more controlled than him and did not wolf mine down. I daintily only ate one bite, then saved the rest for when I took multiple trips to the bathroom all night long. I took another nibble if felt the slightest pang of what I was sure hunger. After all, I had to make it through the night. (I think I got an extra workout in just during my so called sleep hours)

To my amazement, when I began LCHF I found bananas were one of the highest fruits for carbs, a starchy fruit packed with 27 carbs for a med to large size. And they are full of glucose; was it any wonder before changing my behavior and cutting drastically, carbs I was an insomniac. Once I made the mistake of eating an apple a couple hours before bedtime and could not get to sleep for hours. But then, apples are loaded with sugar, though natural but it can still disturb sleep--loaded with approximately 23 carbs!

It's true and I am not proud of myself. I know I am human. It is quite possible I am even more human than many. I mean, how many people do you know who pack a picnic basket for bed? And watch the clock so you don't forget to eat through out the day! When I wasn't putting something in my mouth, I was thinking about the next meal. What to eat and at what time. That kind of thing.

Ok--It's out of the bag and I feel cleansed. I also now sleep like a baby all night. As an added bonus--I do not wear the carpet out running to the bathroom all night! It's a win win I tell you!

Oh yeah--I almost forgot! In cleaning up my act, I no longer go through the day (or night) hungry with food on my mind. I am healed! I am cleansed! I am satisfied with my three meals-and no need for snacking--or grazing all the time!

Big Bonus: Last blog--I reported I had lost 10# and since last week I lost 3 more pounds--and able to wear some pants that were snug in the waist! … Well that's it for now.

    You are having amazing results with LCHF. I’d love to see an example or blog of what you’re eating daily. As I drop carbs, I’m also less hungry. I’m aware of the carbs in fruit. I try to eat no more than 1-2 per day. And yes, this may be too much. I generally stay away from bananas, but love apples and berries. Probably need to watch portion size more. Congratulations you have found something that works!

    Glad you got the snacking/night snacking under control. Thankfully I’ve never been a nighttime snacker. But the clock does dictate when I eat at times. Especially on a work schedule. Hungry or not. Something to definitely think about. Thanks.

    Good for you!! And sometimes I'll just take a spoonful of coconut oil and eat that before bed... seems to work!!

    emoticon on making it as far as you have and losing what you have while doing it! I definitely need to look into eating better and not eating "snacks" when they aren't needed. Stop blaming stress since it's no longer there with the loss of that stressful job. Gotta find another job though. LOL

    emoticon Jan on losing 13 pounds since you have started using and following the LCHF diet! That's amazing and emoticon So happy that you found something that works for you. I know you've been really focused on what works and what doesn't. Many diets/nutritional plans encourage the eating plan you were following, and many people follow it. I'm not a big snacker, but DH is. My weakness is something around 9 PM while relaxing and watching TV. There, now my dirty little secret is out. too!!!
    I hope you have more success with your new eating plan Jan!.

    Glad this works for you.I don't eat bananas .Not that I am allergic to them or anything but you will laugh my Mum did not get them during the war and loved them so much she fed them to me like I was a monkey so I think I had my fill in childhood ! If it is included in a dessert I will eat it and I do like banana bread but otherwise it is not a favourite snack LOL! I would more likely munch on celery !

    Apples don't seem to have that effect on me. Also where they say eating an apple is supposed to make you feel fuller longer. Don't have that on me either. I can sit there and eat 10 apples & not feel anything!

    Spill away, that's why we are here!
    I've been fortunate that I'm not a night snacker. My BFF gets up constantly at night and feels the need to eat; even sandwiches. Fortunately for her, her daytime eating is little so her weight doesn't suffer.
    My problem is grazing like a cow all day in the field, but my "field" is the kitchen! Sometimes I wish I went back to work so food would not be available.
    Oh, wait. I took snacks with me.

    Thank you for sharing this! I think we all have dirty little secrets! The two that I have is that on most days I don't eat enough. I have only been eating twice a day with maybe a little snack of low carb fruit or turkey jerky or some celery with a little cashew butter. Lately, also, with moving and being under a lot of stress we've been eating out a lot and drinking too much. I've reigned in the eating out and the drinking alcohol but I need to do better.

    Oh, yeah same here with the regular snack/ meals, on time every 2-3 hrs. Although the kitchen is close if I need something at night for hunger pains. I have tried intermittent fasting before and it helps too. I need to get back to that and try for lower carb too. We already do higher protein. Glad you're doing much better and losing more weight! emoticon emoticon

    I think we are programmed to the clock from birth. I'm a clock watcher too. I'm not retired yet, still have about 4 years, but my job times are so screwy I never have a set schedule when to eat. I always had the snacks in my car too. But no more.

    And thanks for the info about apples. I would think I was having a healthy snack while watching TV in the evening. I'll have to have one earlier in the day.

    I am glad that you found something that works for you. I have a banana every so often when I want a sweet treat. I also have my daily snack of grapes but I am finding other fruits to go along with it to decrease my grape consumption like strawberries and blueberries. Which I can have on keto. Grapes not so much.

    Suspect there are many that pack bedtime snacks and think about food constantly.

    I was conditioned from childhood to eat 3 meals a day. There were no snacks, not even afterschool snacks 'to hold us over' until dinner. We were not going to starve in the intervening hours between school's end and dinner. Thank you Mom!

    One can still over eat. It doesn't take snacking to do it. But, snacking does inhibit the body's ability to enter fat burning mode and can easily lead to insulin resistance.

    Happy to hear the LCHF is supporting you and freeing you from constant thoughts of food. emoticon

    I was doing low carb but not high fat for the last year. Then, I began having muscular issues from inflammation... I was tired of aching and hurting so I did some research! I discovered all the health benefits of lowering my carbs even more and increasing my fat intake and decided I may as well try it!

    Since your shared your secret, I'll share mine! No one knew, until now emoticon

    This past Sunday I started eating 60% Healthy Fats, 30 -35% Protein and 5 -10% Carbs and I feel GREAT!!! emoticon
    I am not achy nor do I hurt anywhere! I am (so far) losing 1lb a day & I know it's fluid but it's fluid I do NOT need!

    I too, no longer eat snacks! I do good to eat 1,200 calories in a day and now I am not always hungry !

    So far So Good!

    I have for a year now been trying to ignore the clock but I think I am going to start setting my alarm. My getting up i the a.m. is getting later and later and I do not like sleeping late, feel like I don't get anything done. I tend to eat when hungry so that will stay.

    This is almost exactly my schedule right now! I am trying to be more mindful of feeling actually hungry or just bored. I am trying to eliminate the snacking, having better luck with not snacking when I get home from work.

    ha ha I am a clock watcher and whoa and behold a person that thinks about the next meal too... and don't for get potato chips with my cottage cheese... that one i save for a special occasion.! I definitely need to move away from the clock and meal watching attitude , retirement is anywhere 3-7 more years away... maybe then?

    LCHF for years now but, could never express it as it is frowned upon in certain circles here on Spark.
    Oh, and Avocados have more potassium than bananas but on occasion, I still have a banana but. just a .25 cup once in while.
    With LCHF I went from 14 medications to zero , I am no longer hypothyroid and have been sugar and gluten free for 478 days now.
    I balance my pH which is similar to Keto in regards to Fat Consumption - the fat I consume are avocado oil , coconut oil, walnut oil and olive oil , real butter.
    I do eat yogurt and cream cheese , cottage cheese etc just never low fat brands as they're packed with sugar fillers .
    I am more moderate carb now for Fiber - the veggies I consume are all high in Alkaline.
