Back on the Deck

Wednesday, March 27, 2019

It was a long, cold winter, but as always, spring has returned. Today I sat with my back to the sun in a black mesh chair, listened to some newly arrived birds and watched the river run. The high country snow is beginning to melt and the river is both mesmerizing and frightening. During the summer, our river is a sleepy, clear and cool little creek--just over ankle deep in most places, but at this time of year, if the winter has been generous with snowfall, the river is a raging freight train of white capped water. It crests every night around 2:30-3:00 AM as the melted snow reaches us, then recedes slightly as the day goes on. So I visit several times a day to see the changes. The boulders walk, stones float and branches rush down stream. Yesterday there were large cat prints in the wet sand. Today they have been washed away, leaving a blank canvas for the next night visitors. It is comforting to know that the cycle of seasons is continuing and that I am part of it.

Beautifully said! I love (and have a healthy respect for) the power of water, and being connected to ebb and flow of life around me.
