FINAL FOLLOWUP RE MY COLONOSCOPY
Saturday, March 09, 2019
In my last blog I reported to ya'll the results I received in the mail from my colonoscopy. I mentioned some concerns I had with the results so I decided to make an appointment with my doctor for a consultation to discuss them and here is what my doctor said:
In short, my concerns about not waiting 3 years for my next colonoscopy were verified. My doctor suggested that we go ahead to schedule another one in 2 years just for "peace of mind" on my part, and then make a determination from that result whether we can put it off one more year after that one. So, while I am not thrilled about having to go back sooner for my next one, I would rather be safe than sorry. Here's the GREAT news! He can and will prescribe a "gentler" prep for my next one. Apparently, there are several forms of prep so, talk to your doctor about this and select the one that suits you best. ( Before this, I didn't know I had a choice.) I plan to have a little talk with the nurse practitioner who prescribed my last prep and ask why she didn't mention this fact to me.
Okay, so I would also like to share with anyone that is interested... according to my doctor, there is NO way to prevent a polyp in the colon and there are no symptoms if you have a cancerous one. Yes, it is good to eat a healthy diet including fiber and exercise, but that does not prevent polyps. That is why it is so imperative to have a colonoscopy(s); especially after the age of 50 or if there has been a family member with colon cancer. So, please take it from me. Despite my moaning about the prep involved, it is well worth it. I hope all this info can help someone else who has been putting it off or thinking it isn't important to have a colonoscopy!
