Self discovery...

Why don't we just know who we are? Today someone posted this pic/meme/whatever and I love it! But it prompted my thinking on why we don't just come into the word knowing who we are. Why is this a discovery? We can't be taught by our parents or elders because they don't know. It's like the blind leading the blind.
