Motivation after Resolution

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

Here we are again, mid-February.

Now that we have Valentine's Day behind us, we just have to make it past the Mardi Gras season which ends March 5, 2019 this year.

Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday because it is a day of excesses before Lent starts. I don't personally observe Lent but my Catholic friends spend quite a bit of brain power figuring out what they will be giving up for Lent every year. This year it will be from March 6th until April 18th. That's forty days or a little less than six weeks to keep a commitment. I wonder how much more successful they are than someone committing to a New Year's resolution. We are a little over six weeks into the year now.

For the first time since I can remember, my own resolution had nothing to do with losing weight or getting fit, at least not directly related. My resolution was to stop being such a hermit; to live my life and not just exist. So far I’m happy to report, I have improved a great deal. I have several friends and also several family members that I’ve made a point to do things with as often as possible.

The interesting thing is that since I wasn’t so focused on the weight loss, it wasn’t in the forefront of my mind and I felt more confident in general when I went out in public. Even being over 200 lbs like I am now, I haven’t let that hold me back from doing things I enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn't stop me from looking forward to next year when it will be even easier to walk long distances and explore new places, but I know those days will come and I’m content. I no longer want to waste time waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect weight or the perfect level of fitness. Life isn't EVER perfect, but it sure can be perfectly enjoyable if you just give yourself a chance.

How is everyone doing with their resolutions?
