Our school district gives a week off starting on Presidents' Day. I don't know who was more excited, the teachers or the students! Well...possibly the teachers because we work in a city school, and many of our students come from families that are struggling - and the free breakfasts and lunches are important.
I have different projects in mind - mainly to process some ceramic pieces, especially the special order. My check to the art gallery for a space at the art festival in September has been cashed, so chances are good that I'm in - so I want to restock some things, and make some unusual animals for my own pleasure and for the clients who are looking for something unique. A friend suggested sloths, because they seem to be coming into popularity (I HAVE made them - 2 toed and 3 toed - and sold them). The thing is, they're almost always upside down, so I make them to hang on a string which you can tie to something, like a curtain rod.
My cousin said she'd like a sheep for her collection, and I was pretty sure I had some in stock, but when I went to count I only had a ram and a lamb. So I made 6, different breeds (including the popular Valais)
Besides art projects, I will probably do some cooking. Yesterday I made a vat of my cheesy potato-corn chowder, putting 5 portions in the freezer for school lunches and the rest in the fridge to consume this week. (Since I live alone, I make a large quantity of something and portion it out and freeze it for my school lunches or dinners - what I call my MRE's, Meals Ready to Eat.) My nephew and his fiancee and her mother are coming for dinner Saturday, and I'm waiting to hear from him if he wants a repeat of my fabulous pot roast (of which he had TWO big servings of meat)
or roasted chicken and vegetables. I bought 2 big slabs of chuck roast which I'll prepare, if not for company, for myself. (and I'll give a serving or 2 to my retired friend). I also have enough peeled over-ripe bananas in the freezer to make 4 batches of muffins - and I have raisins, cashews, and chopped dates to add to them.
We have a winter weather advisory today - and I am SO glad I don't have to go anywhere. No rush to shovel the driveway, in that wind chill making it feel like 9 degrees. You know it's cold when even the snow complains when you walk on it.
I also need to clean my house, which I can do the day before company. For some reason it doesn't get as dirty as it did when there were 5 kids and a dog coming and going. I do tease Rosie about "how come there's all this cat hair all over the place?"
And being on vacation also gives me more time to Spark!
