MY Soup is Better!!

Tuesday, February 12, 2019

OK, it's official.

Because the reno has basically closed down my cooking, I bought some jarred soup at the grocery store on Saturday and tried a bowl of the chicken quinoa last night for supper. Warmed in the microwave.

It looked OK in the jar . . . but

Bleccch.

Watery. Flavourless. Lacking in veggies. Not cheap either.

It was hot (kitchen is cold) and I DID finish that bowlful. But: I don't think I'll bother with the rest of the jar.

I also bought a jar of minestrone. Maybe that will be better?

Certainly bolsters my vainglorious soup Maestro pride!!

I don’t like canned soups either. Yet our supermarkets are stocked high with them. Are people just buying it for their kids or adults taste buds so use to processed foods. If they ever made a homemade soup they would not enjoy the canned.

LOL - yeah, most store-bought soups aren't as good as homemade. And you are a soup maven!!! But, well, I hope the minestrone is better. And maybe you can doctor it up a bit?

Well, of COURSE your soup is better than that soup was. If I was a bettor I would bet on your soup anyday and over anyone else's! It will be over before you know it and you will look back and say, "I can't believe it is done". emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yeah, I know. The premade soups are always not as good as homemade. But, still, since I hate to cook and sometimes I can't make the grocery store, I do keep some of the low sodium versions on hand.

UGH! Homemade soup is always better and I'm sure your soups are delicious. emoticon

We're lucky to have a couple of places nearby where you can get their "homemade" (or store made) soup that is actually pretty good.

BTW, when your kitchen is done, try Mark Bittman's Tuscan Farro Soup (https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipe
s/1845-tuscan-farro-soup). supposed to be 4 servings, but I think we'll end up with at least 8 healthy servings.

I commiserate with you... I truly dislike that sort of commercial food. Making and loving soup as you do, it must be a real trial.

I wonder if you'd be interested in a gadget to get you through this adventure. I just bought this after rave reviews from people I know. I got if for Miss O to use to stream-line meal creation/preparation and reduce the time it takes to get some hot soup made... she's another soup lover, and I cant keep up with her appetite, so I figured she needs to learn to make her own. Check it out (easy to use, minimal space required, minimal clean-up, fast):

Never cared for canned soups -- tasted metallic to me. With that said, I've read here on SP that Amy's Organic Reduced Sodium Soups are tasty.

Of course yours is better but sometimes the cook needs a break even when there is no reno going on.

I am surprised you do not have a slow cooker...I make a majority of my soups in mine. Just tried a new one (it's on Sparkfriends) called Sow Cooker Cabbage Patch Detox Soup/stew. Yummy and open for improvisation.
Just your cup of soup. emoticon

I love my own homemade soup too. You are right those soups in the store are way too expensive.

We just finished our salmon chowder last night. Hmmmmm. Tasty!

No doubt in my mind that as the soup Maestro your soup is better. Being without kitchen access has to be challenging. Hope the reno is progressing nicely.

Every time I pass by the canned soups I can still conjure up the taste in my mind.
    NO WAY!

I bet your soups are absolutely scrumptious!

Do you have a crock pot? I've been known to throw soup ingredients in that overnight.

You are accustomed to all of your wonderful flavors and special touches. Store bought lacks all of your personal input! I wonder if you could toss in some of your personality via the microwave and then heat the store bought...perhaps that would help a bit...

Try using the slow cooker while your kitchen is out. It can just sit on the floor somewhere, or on a cutting board if it is on Carpet. Good luck. I like Amy's brand soups, but they aren't anything like the homemade. Hang in there! It will be better soon!

OMG, when I think back on my childhood having my Dad's soup, I am so grateful that I learned to make my own soup! Sometimes reading the ingredient list on the soups just makes my head spin. Where's the food??? Lots of preseratives, salt, etc. Hope you get your kitchen back soon.

Do you have a slow cooker? I use that a lot for my soups.

    Omg...
I almost bought a packet of dried cream of mushroom soup a few chilly days ago (this cough is truly wearing me out!) until I looked at the ingredient list...just awful!
My local market offers four different soups each day, better, I am sure but definitely not like OUR homemade soups!
Hope you get your kitchen back soon.
We have some sort of omelettes 2-3 nights a week as I am too tired to cook and he has no appetite.

Homemade is always better. I don't mind some of the soups, green chicken curry wasn't too bad. Always up for a borscht, hard to mess that up.
