New Diagnosis New Me

Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Actually I’m a year in from diagnosis but you get the idea. In December 2017 I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. A lot of things made sense, but not right away, because I was actually diagnosed with Silent Celiac Disease which means I didn’t have any gastrointestinal symptoms that would point to Celiac a lot earlier than 35 years into my life. This last year has been tough, disinfecting the house to ensure no gluten particles are anywhere. Not being able to eat out conveniently (anywhere I can eat is $18 a meal at lowest). Learning what products are safe and what ones are not. Over this last year I have been so thankful I live in Canada where our labelling laws make it a lot easier to know for sure if food is safe. (If it has a ‘contains’ or ‘may contain’ statement that does not include wheat or gluten then it’s safe). However, over the last year I’ve also put on weight, which I was warned about. My body has been in starvation mode for the last 35 years, as it healed, no matter how healthy I tried to eat, I was going to gain weight. I’m now at the heaviest I’ve eve been in my life: 180 lbs. I’m currently at the weight my husband wants to get down to. So, in an effort to get back to my good strong body, I am joining the Spark community and also using Darebee and the Hive to workout and keep myself active. Here’s to a new year, where my diagnosis is not what defines me, and does not control my body. Here’s to my year of healthy!
