Yoga adaptations for morning
Tuesday, January 15, 2019
I always fought the alarm clock until I made myself a bargain: stay in bed an extra few minutes under the covers doing "bed yoga." Mostly a few child poses, then up on all fours for some cat and cows. Mindfully breathing, and sending extra breath to sore spots, I started the day on a positive note.
While coffee is brewing, I take a loose kneed Woogie pose from TaiChi, and rotate waist gently side to side, swinging arms. Each time my arms come across the front of my body, I "tap" myself. First tapping hips, then waist, shoulders, arm pits. The 2 minutes of brewing is spent Tapping, with a slight squatting motion on each rotation.
Coffee in hand, I proceed to my chair for some alternate Nostril breathing, using the outside of the warm cup held up to my face, as the nostril pincher instead of a finger. Block a nostril with coffee cup edge, breathe in through open nostril, switch cup to block that same nostril, breathe out through other side nostril. Using warm cup decongests sinuses, so I do a few breaths, blow nose, and enjoy some really deep full breaths. Also put cup on forehead, let the warmth open those sinuses.
If I do a decent morning routine, say my prayers, and give myself these few minutes before I set intentions, I am calmer and brighter. Hopefully, I am a better tool for a better community.
