Today was a very frustrating day. My Dad passed away 3 years ago at the age of 98 and my mother passed away a year ago at the age of 92. Since Mom passed, I found series EE bonds that she had purchased in 1984-2000 in her name with my Dad as her beneficiary. The face value of the bonds is 3500 dollars and they are still gaining interest. I am the surviving member of the family. There is no estate or probate as we had liquidated their belongings several years ago when they had to go into assisted living so I contacted the US Treasury Dept. on line and after going through all possible scenarios, downloaded the forms for both parents deceased and I am sole survivor with no will and no probate and no court proceedings. Filled out paperwork and took it to bank which is required for them to see me sign forms and apply their signature and required medallion stamp. As far as I can see, this is only certifying that they observed my signature and that I am the one signing the form. Had my ID with me to prove I am who I am... WRONG... They want to send all the paperwork to their legal department, copies of Mom and Dad's death certificates (which of course I did not have with me) , legal paperwork that states I am their heir (I am their daughter- last man standing- had durable power of attorney which expired as soon as they died so is no longer any good), copies of all 40 plus bonds (which I did not have with me)... then they decided that because I did not have legal paperwork stating I was heir that maybe I should go hire an attorney to find out my rights and to also call and talk to the treasury department.
Then I had a check from my prior employer from our retirement that I was rolling over to my IRA... I talked to the IRA people the other day to find out just what I needed to do to accomplish this... got the check from my employer sent to me as directed and IRA people sent me the forms I needed... very confusing forms so I called IRA people only to find out they sent me the wrong forms and the check should have been made out to IRA people and not me so now more entanglement to get it straighten out... new forms on the way
Sassy and I took a very long walk to get rid of the frustrations "we" were feeling... walked almost 2 1/2 miles in 45 minutes. Every day we go a little farther. We are both tired tonight.
