Don't Worry, Be Happy

Wednesday, January 09, 2019

In the late 1980's I bought a Bobby McFerrin album just to get the song, "Don't Worry, Be Happy." I was surprised to find that the entire album is a masterpiece to listen to. He is a very talented man who is a guest conductor for symphony orchestras all over the world. He still gets on the road for concerts, although I have never seen him in person. However, his sweet little lyric, "don't worry, be happy" has probably been my mantra for many years.

When I made my New Year's Resolutions this year, I vowed to make Be Happy my #1 resolution/goal. I also vowed to not-under-threat-of-a-firing-s
quad ever again put "lose weight" or "go on a serious diet" any where on my list.

There's something about telling yourself to "be happy" that just ignites it within me. I suppose that may not be true for others, but I've been a basically happy person my entire life. I inherited that from my mother, who was the most cheerful person in any room, in spite of situations that could bring others to their knees.

There's this part of me that feels like the resolution/goal "Be Happy" I can just go check it off my list . . . Done! But not so fast . . . it will not do any harm to me or those around me if I continue to remind myself daily that my #1 goal is to be happy . . . when the health crises arrive, finances seem stretched, and tempers around me may flare. I resolve to Be Happy! That doesn't mean I can't respond to pain in myself or others, but I am going to try to keep my happy umbrella open when the rain comes so I can tweak my attitude. That's called "singing in the rain!"

My happy meter is one of the drivers of my humor. I love to joke and try to be witty. I told Bob I would marry him because he made me laugh. True story. After 44 years of marriage, I can attest that the ability to make your spouse laugh is highly underrated. People who know me can always expect me to try my best to be funny and they often respond in kind. I have a friend in Elisabeth, Pennsylvania who I haven't seen in at least 20 years, yet he regularly calls me to tell me his latest new joke. I received gifts of everything from paddle balls and harmonicas to leopard print stilettos and a box of blue hair dye. A dear friend of mine from Wamego, Kansas (home of the Wizard of Oz museum!) sent me the following:

(Her sign says Rise and Whine!)
She's been standing guard over my mornings for ten years and I always get a laugh out of her. But when I went in to write my word of the year--RISE--on the mirror I was thrilled! Thanks to the universe for that moment of synchronicity! I have written RISE in a large script on the mirror above her. I resolve to BE HAPPY every day and if I miss a day, well look who I have to answer to! Maxine decked out in chenille.

So Be Happy friends. My next blog will be about my #2 goal: Eat Mindfully.

How funny to come across your blog today...my five year old granddaughter, Miss Pearl, has been walking around the last two weeks singing that song! She couldn’t tell me where she heard it but we had fun watching it on YouTube.
I have always said I am one of those sickeningly positive people...no matter how bad things are I always think things could be worse!
And I feel like humor is the cement that has held our marriage together so long...we laugh every single day...married as teenagers and just celebrated our 50th anniversary!

Rise and shine! Be happy! I love this! Once upon a time, a woman told me that happiness is a decision we make when we get up in the morning. I can remember thinking that she was detached from reality. Decide to be happy? "No," I thought, "happiness is when you are in tune with those in your family and with your friends." Now many years later, I can see that I was being naive and the woman was correct. Happiness comes from within oneself. You make your own happiness, nobody else does. If a person is unhappy, it is easy to blame others but the reality is that you make your own happiness. This is so empowering!

Rise -- oh yes. Wonderful word.

And yes, I'm with you on being happy: most of the time for most of us we're just about as happy as we choose to be. My own DH has kept me laughing for all the years of our marriage and he thinks I'm pretty funny too!!

I think that is a wonderful #1 goal. I've entered the same mind frame. Been worried and depressed about things I can't control. So decided to just do what makes me smile. So far it's helping me alot.
