Achievements, and Skiing

Tuesday, January 08, 2019

Spark Coach recommended listing three achievements that I am proud of for today. For me, it is a proud achievement that I skied (cross-country skiing) with my friend Barbara for 2 hours of great cardio exercise. It is a second achievement that I skied down Crybaby hill without falling (it is very hard on my knees to use the usual wedge turns/snowplow, so I had to adjust my style and go very slowly for about 2/3 of the hill, zig-zagging at a glacial speed. Then I raced down the hill at high speed for the remaining 1/3 of the hill -- Barbara, who was patiently waiting for me at the bottom of the hill, was amazed at my speed on the final descent!) And I am proud that I finished a major project for a charity group that I have volunteered with.

Here are a couple of photos from my ski today.

Me outside the hut

View from the hut. The gray across the valley is freezing fog from the air inversion. It is actually warmer on top of the mountain (38 degrees) than it is in town at lower elevation (29 degrees).

We ran into Hanne and her two neighbors (and friends). We skied together for a little bit, but Hanne's group was going much slower in order to give one neighbor (who is a brand new skier) lessons. The new skier suggested we move on; we were uniformly helpful and encouraging, but she just didn't want an audience after she fell. (She thanked us for cheering her on when we saw her later in the parking lot; and we all met up at a coffee shop for post-skiing hot beverages).

Barbara inspires me to be bolder going down the hills. And she said I inspire her too, because I am good at my kick/glide (on the flats and up the hills), and I lead the way. That is, I lead the way unless we are going downhill! Then I am cautious and tentative -- but I don't fall! And I AM really proud of getting back out there and going skiing! My old arthritic knees need replacement -- but exercise is GOOD for me. Barbara is amazing too; she has Parkinson's disease but she gets out there and does the best that she can in spite of her health.

It’s gorgeous out there. Skiing is over for me though I did ski way back when in Montreal where the hills were an hour away. Your friend with Parkinson’s is a warrior woman.

Alison, I have told you many times just how much you inspire me, but I am going to tell you again. YOU are an INSPIRATION and I am living vicariously through your adventures. I am anxious to try cross-country skiing again after I get the go-ahead from the spinal surgeon, but he has already informed me that downhill is out of the question. After 3 spinal surgeries, a fall could be a disaster and I DO NOT want to chance it. I can find joy in cross-country without the fear of falling.

Loved your pictures..............beauty abounds in your area. Our snow from last weekend has melted due to three days in the 40s and Ken can't get back out on the ice to fish because it just isn't safe right now. It has been an unusual winter so far.
