Diet reset

I've been reading Melissa Hartwig's book "Food Freedom Forever" and have decided to take on a diet reset in January.

I'm not going to attempt a Whole30, since it's just too restrictive, and I just don't think it would work for me right now, maybe some day I'll try it. But I did decide to try the most simple reset she suggests. I'll eliminate gluten, dairy and alcohol for 30 days, and reduce/eliminate sugar, artificial sweeteners and processed foods.

Prep is the key here, I need to look through the pantry/freezer at what I have and determine what is off limits for January, and what I can have. Probably the dairy will be the hardest for me, as I enjoy cream in my coffee, cheese, and butter! But it's only 30 days or so (the reintroduction period is about another 30 days or so, probably less, since I will be reintroducing fewer things.)

Journaling is encouraged, so I plan to blog the process, just short notes on what's happening, if I notice any changes, etc. Learning how different foods/drinks affect me should be instructive, so I hope to get some good information from the process.

    Are you sure this is the "most simple"? It sounds like a big challenge to me! But I agree it's good to eliminate foods and rebuild your diet to learn how things affect you. I think we've trained our bodies to tolerate a lot of bad foods.

    I hope it helps you discover which foods are not beneficial for you. Most of the problem with grain is that it is tainted with chemicals from over use of weed killer and fertilizers. I buy only organic grains now.

    I was taken through a 6-week gluten elimination with the guidance of a nutritionist. It was interesting. I did not notice any significant improvement during the elimination period. But, when I attempted the reintroduction? Wowza! My body was NOT having it! The intolerance, for me, is strong and may actually be an allergy. Several months later I experienced a significant inflammatory flare. It wasn't simply gluten that's an issue for me. All grains were removed at that point. I realize that my reactions happen to represent about 1% - 2% of the population. But, for some of us, gluten and grains present serious health challenges. I feel so much better without them.


    Dairy I can handle if it is a2 dominant (goat, sheep, Jersey cow, etc.) and/or raw. Otherwise, dairy can be an issue for me too.

    Alcohol? Forget it! Most alcohol is grain based and my body does not tolerate grains.
