5 Weeks Down and What I’ve been Up To...

Sunday, December 09, 2018

I just completed week 5 of my food plan. I am doing very well! I have more energy and my tummy feels so much better. Last week I bought an air fryer. It took some time to research. Some brands do not work - they don’t get hot enough, have short trays, etc. Phillips has the highest ratings, so that’s what I bought. There are lots of deals on them right now. I made homemade fries from Yukon Gold potatoes. They tasted really good. I downloaded their app. There are tons of recipes. I will try another this week. Last week was very busy. My hubby is away for a couple weeks on business. His 86 year old mother had a stroke on Wednesday. It affected her speech and balance. His sister lives far away, so I am handling everything. I did her wash and cleaned out her fridge yesterday and took more things she needed to her in the hospital. She will move to rehab sometime next week. She’s in really good spirits. She also had a bad kidney infection. She must feel so much better now that her heart rate is down and the infection is going away. Thursday, I went to the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster to see the play “Jesus”. What a production! The set was so interactive - it was amazing. They had live camels, pigs, donkeys, sheep, doves, dogs, and cats. At times the animals would walk up the aisles on cue! The lights and water were magnificent and they did a beautiful job portraying his life and all others he encountered. We also went to a humungous buffet called “Shady Maple”. At this point, I really appreciated the food plan I am on. The buffet was overwhelming to me - too much food and too many people. I am a germ freak, so the thought of the serving spoons being held by everyone ... yuck! I made a salad, grabbed a baked potato, broccoli, some fruit...and I was done! And, it gave me extra time to check out their HUGE gift shop. I made it through half before we had to leave for the show. Friday was the first time my eating disorder awareness group presented “Eating Disorders 101” to nurses in a hospital. We are now educating the medical community on what to look for, how to handle and give resources. Our feedback was extremely positive. The workshop intertwines my son’s story. I am now in the midst of planning an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party for my neighbors. I have gathered a lot of fun ideas!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

You may have to take self-satisfaction in caring for your mother-in-law. Though the care of the elderly is so needful, not many volunteer to do it.

I never thought about buffets in that light, though I have seen people use their hands instead of the utensils provided, to put stuff on their plates and kids tasting and putting back stuff at a chocolate fountain. It's a shame that manners aren't taught to many youngsters nowadays.

I have seen the air fryers advertised, but one would probably just be something else that sits on the counter in our house.

I haven't been to a Sight and Sound Theater in years. They do a fantabulous job! Glad you got the opportunity.

SO glad you are helping your mother in law. And that you are giving the eating disorders presentation; very important information!
I agree with you about buffets -- too many choices, and some people touch the food on the trays.

emoticon Sound like your eating plan is really working for you - congrats! I also love that your group is educating medical professionals on handling eating disorders - such an important issue. Enjoy the Christmas holidays - maybe I will ask for an air fryer from Santa!

Glad you're enjoying your air fryer and managed to navigate the buffet.

Good work with the eating disorder presentation. My experience is like Janet's: "big press" 20 to 30 years ago. It seems things like binge drinking and opiod use have taken the forefront in recent years.

Enjoy the sweater party and best wishes to your mother-in-law as she recovers from the stroke.

I tend to take one look at buffet these days and have pretty much the same reaction, but more because there's rarely anything on it I'm willing to eat any more.

I agree on the buffet. Tried it and done.

Congratulations on your eating disorder presentation. 20 to 30 years ago eating disorders were “big press” but now I rarely see anything as other social issues are covered.

Have a nice time, and I don’t think there is such a thing as an “ugly” sweater. Maybe one only a mother could love!
