Went to an AA meeting

Thursday, December 06, 2018

No, not because I'm an alcoholic, it was part of my field experience for volunteer training. It was an experience that really moved me, and it relates to so much of my life.

It was a truly inspirational and influential experience.

After normal opening protocol, where a different member will read the 12 steps to recovery and what AA is, and the group reciting the Serenity Prayer together, a member was the featured speaker. He spoke of his battles with alcoholism, and how he needed AA to help him recover. He stated that he used to be a toxic person, where he’d blame everyone and everything but himself. He spoke of the moment he realized he was an alcoholic, and how attending AA meetings has allowed him to love both himself and others. His message was "My ability to love is constrained by my inability to forgive.”

Other members spoke, all on a volunteer basis. Two things that stuck with me that people said were “I used to think I was a bad person who needed to become good. AA helped me realize that I’m a good person who’s sick, and needs to get well” and “My best day in the past is not as good as the worst day in my future will be.”

The leader and the members were very welcoming of me, and of each other. Perhaps the most influential takeaway from the meeting was how loving, welcoming, and non-judgmental the members are. They’re truly all in this together. Everyone spoke from the heart. It was truly an amazing experience.

It reminded me of Sparkpeople, and the challenges we face losing weight. We're good people trying to get healthier. We support each other, and we're in this weight loss, get fit escapade together!

Peace!
