Where oh where is the bat, man?

Tuesday, December 04, 2018

Had a little adventure a few weeks ago, when a flying critter made it's way into the attic, and then into the house, and into my room. I eventually managed to open the door, after cowering a couple of minutes, and it flew out, and down the stairs. I went down after it, and tried to find it, after arming myself with a pair of badminton rackets. But the search failed miserably. The darn thing had holed up somewhere.

The next day, my nephew was coming to visit, along with his parents, and so in the morning, I searched again, moving stuff around, but the bat was nowhere to be found. Figured maybe I'd hit it with one of magazines I'd thrown in its general direction the night before, and done some actual damage. The family types left and I settled in to watch some TV late in the afternoon, when I heard a little chattering from very close by the window, a spot I'd already searched earlier in the day, and sure enough, there was the creature, alive and well, and as soon as I moved the curtain, off it flew, in its own erratic way.

But the badminton rackets were still at hand, and I was able to get a shot in on it after about 5 minutes of flight time. Didn't kill it, just knocked it to the floor and covered it up on the small rug by the door. This being mid October, I had no problem covering it up with the racket, and opening the door, just depositing it out on the porch. It wasn't there the next morning, so it was obviously well enough to fly away.

The reason this occurred to me at way too late o'clock is because I just peeked at a blog from another spark user, who has created a group to commemorate spark friends that have gone away, whether just from the site, or, sadly, more permanently. A few such folks did occur to me, but oddly enough, the first thing that popped to mind was the thought, “I wonder what happened to that darn bat?”

I remember one in the public library. It was caught and taken outside where it was able to fly away.
I enjoy watching the bats here in the summer as they fly around catching insects.
We also get fruit bats migrating through in the summer.
