Practice, Practice, Practice

Well, here I am at the end of the book again. A few months ago, I actually completed this book for the first time and realized that all these skills really are not that hard to do once they become a part of a routine.

This lesson takes us back to the beginning where the author reminds us how far we have come in our thinking.

Characteristic 1: I used to confuse hunger with the desire to eat.
Characteristic 2: I used to have a low tolerance for hunger and cravings.
Characteristic 3: I used to like the feeling of being full.
Characteristic 4: I used to fool myself with how many calories I actually ate.
Characteristic 5: I used to comfort myself with food.
Characteristic 6: I used to feel helpless and hopeless when I gained weight.
Characteristic 7: I used to focus on unfairness.
Characteristic 8: I used to stop following my meal plan once I lost weight.

I put these all in the past tense because my thinking has changed since I started with book. One of the most profound things I have learned reading this book is there is always a thought before I put anything in my mouth. Eating just does not happen without me thinking about doing it. The most important take away from these lessons for me has been 'how am I going to respond to that initial thought to eat'.

My thoughts about eating what I really not ought to eat if I am to reach my goal are not going to stop just because I have come to the end of the Beck Diet Solution "pink" book. I must continue to practice, practice, practice these skills that I have learned and then continue to do them.

Many times, it had been stated that there will come a time when it will not be necessary to continue with all these steps, but at times, it will be necessary for reviewing and maybe reintroducing some of those you mastered in the past because you are slowly slipping back into the old way of thinking.

It is important to not think of these times as failures, but just a temporary setback. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get right back to it. Don't tell yourself that it is all over, unless of course, you are telling yourself you are done with those sabotaging thoughts.

    Well said! Wonderful blog. Wonderful lessons.

    I will no longer think of failure, but of temporary setbacks. I know I can brush myself off and recommit because I have done it many times before. I have most of those characteristics you listed. Will work for more! And then those temporary setbacks will become fewer and shorter and less deviating from my plan!! Truly, I've already come a long, long way and it is good to recognize that (give credit in Beck speak!).

    I think you should put those 8 characteristics onto a poster that will live front and centre on your fridge or a kitchen cupboard door. We all need those daily reminders and when we can't evade them we act upon them. emoticon emoticon
