My 50th Half Marathon - Battle to the Pacific

Monday, November 05, 2018

Yesterday, I completed my 50th Half Marathon. When I started this running journey, I never in my wildest dream thought I would someday it a milestone like this. I have found that setting a goal to run a Half every month keeps me motivated to continue training. It has been difficult to get the miles in at times; especially when traveling; but I do try my best.

The Half yesterday was here in my home territory. Typically, I have to travel to events, but there are a couple a year in my immediate area. I was a little worried that it would be raining, but fortunately the rain stopped a few hours before we started.

The Battle to the Pacific is a small event held at Fort Stevens State Park. It borders the Pacific Ocean and also the Columbia River with excellent paved trails. I'm guessing that there were maybe 30 people or so total running the Half. I was a little apprehensive about the course as there are so many criss-crossing trails. The organizers indicated the course was marked with red flags... so follow the flags.

I'm slow, so after we set off and in no time at all I was by myself... no one to follow. I watched for the flags and had no issues until I got to the Northern most part and saw no flags. I had looked at the course map and it showed we went around an old WWII Fort, however I didn't see a trail. Hmmm... stumbled around for awhile before getting back on the trail.

I really enjoyed the beauty of the course. Lots of leaves were on the ground in places and it made for somewhat slippery conditions. I was so surprised when I rounded the last corner and saw a line of people cheering for me. What? Usually, I see my husband but my daughter and son-in-law were also there as well as some other "Half Fanatics" who waited for me to finish.

My daughter and SIL were also at the finish line for my 1st Half (Race for the Roses in Portland) so that was really special. Always some sort of drama it seems. At the 1st Half I was stopped by a train for 10 minutes and on my 50th I got off course and ended up doing an extra mile... it is all good though. Makes for memories!

Next up is the Holiday Half in December! Now I'm hoping to get to #64 by my 64th birthday next November... we shall see!
