Trials and tribulations about nursing home placement.

Saturday, October 13, 2018

I went through the grueling process of deciding to place my husband in a skilled nursing facility.

Well almost 3 months after getting the application handed in and touring the facility, he is here with me in the condo I purchased. I had to "spend down" so Medicaid would accept us.

I moved us from a lovely apartment in a great Independent Living complex. It seemed perfect. But renting would not "spend down" our money. I really do not want the responsibilities of owning a place. But here we are. AND I have no aides to help me care for hubby.

I think I explained that problem in an older blog.

I yesterday toured another nursing home. The guide was very clear about the delays in getting a person in. Many kinds of people will have priority over admitting my husband. Darn. I thought the first place I applied to would be quick . I was told people from our Independent Living Facility would have priority. Not so. Rehab patients have priority. They added a new out patient rehab and those people apparently are filling the beds in the skilled nursing area.

I am quite deflated now.

Chris I am so sorry you are going through all these troubles. I hope and pray there will be a good facility that can take your DH. It is so sad that you have to "spend down" to get the help you need!!!

What do they say - getting old isn't for sissies. So sorry that you are not able to get the help you need. Prayers and blessing to you and your DH.

Oh boy, all I can say is you have my huts and prayers. It is difficult enough to make the decision to move DH to nursing facility, but making it long and drawn out . . . horrible. Prayers.

I'm so sorry you are having to cope with all of this. Making the decision to place him in a facility and move was hard enough, and now you're having to deal with all of this. I know that you are doing all you can. I hope you can find someone to help with his care at the condo until you can find him a place.

Why is it so, so hard? I'm hoping for a miracle.

Oh, Chris! How on earth are you coping on your own? Have you still got your hoist and bed, and mobility vehicle? Can you get in/out of the condo ok?

Jeez! It's the same here in the UK, you have to be an emergency before you can get a place. Also here they will take your property as equity to pay for care, so you end up broke too. It's awful. We all pray to just die in our own beds and not need care - but life ain't like that, is it?!

I really feel for you, my friend. I hope you have at least one person (friend or family) who can offer you support.........

It may be tedious, but keep checking around to see if other places have the same set-up. I worked more than 2 years in a facility where the rehab unit and beds were totally separate and their activities and population did not have anything to do with those in the skilled care areas. Best wishes to you.

Nursing home placement here in western Kentucky can be a challenge. Usually the person is in the hospital and gets placed in a bed not usually preferred location until a bed there opens up.a long drawn out process. Hugs

Oh Chris I hate to hear this. I thought that hubby went to the skilled nursing facility before you moved. I didn't realize that you were taking care of him and doing the move. Hard to believe that a long term patient would not take precedence over someone who will be short term. Guess things work differently in NY than in FL.

I am so sorry to hear about your difficulties in finding your husband a place. Is there any way he can have live-in help? Or someone who visits during the day?
