Seasonal affective disorder tip that may help others as well as me

Saturday, October 13, 2018

I've finally figured out what is wrong with me lately. I've been craving and bingeing on starchy carbs in the late afternoon and evening and put some weight back on. I thought it was my eating disorder due to the stress and anxiety of going through another medical assessment.

However, after some research i've realised it's my seasonal affective disorder kicking in with probably a touch of eating disorder thrown in as well. To deal with it I need to switch my eating pattern around so that I eat the vast majority of my starchy carbs later in the day which is completely counter-intuative to what I've always been told about losing weight. I suppose I should have paid more attention to what my body has been telling me all along, that I prefer to eat light in the morning and at lunchtime regardless of the season. Better to work with your natural instincts than against them. Hopefully this will help me stay in better control.

Guess I also need to put my other strategies into effect now too i.e. sunrise/sunset clock, light therapy and aromatherapy. I swear it's a full-time job just keeping track of my medical conditions!

So here's to yogurt and protein smoothies for breakfast plus hearty stews for dinner and cereal for supper. 😲

GOLFGMA - The rule is not to eat within 2 hours of bedtime and since I had a gastric bypass I can't eat large amounts at once like I used to. I also don't feel hunger pangs like other people do.

After 3 months of using it I also now fall asleep within 20 minutes of starting the sunset program on my Lumie sunrise/sunset alarm clock to the sound of cicadas. It takes at least an hour to wake me up though and I use the beep as the other sounds just don't do it for me.

It's also much harder for me to sleep over the summer months so I use an eye mask as well as the sunset program. Most people know about winter SAD but I suffer from summer SAD too which is not as common.

I also use Tisserands Essential Oil Rollerball Essential Survival Kit (Containing De-Stress(anytime), Sweet Dreams (bedtime) & Energy (when I get up).

Good idea. I think I will get a daylight lamp as well.

I find my DayLight lamp (over my computer) is really helpful as the days get shorter. And: getting outside at lunch time for a walk is good too!!

All are processed the same no matter what time of day we eat. Seems it might make sleeping harder since the heavier foods would take more time to digest. I need to experiment too! emoticon

Interesting, I will try this as the season continues to progress and days grow shorter and darker. Thanks!
