Getting back to normal

Thursday, October 04, 2018

DH came out of hospital on Monday and I went back to work on Tuesday. I wondered how he would manage. I had meals set up, but he waited till I came home pretty late. Yesterday was less well set up. DH had to go to the doctor and the day was a series of pickles, but he was determined to show that he can manage everything. Hmmmm! It’s great that he has the spirit to try it. I threw some dinner together quite late again. At least it was healthy and we enjoyed it.

Today was the last day of teaching for this week. It was a new term with some new students, so it involved extra tension, but I’ve got very lively new students and it was great to get into a world which is so far from caregiving. Last night, after a day of DH pickles and scrapes, I was wondering how I could manage this double gig of full-time working and caregiving, but it’s a great way to stay sane and balanced.

Exercise is down and eating is up so I’ll have to do some tweaking, but I have to admit, I’m rather pleased with myself for getting through the week. Next week will be easier because I’ll be in a rhythm. And I’ve learnt that next year’s teaching schedule will be easier than this one.

So SORRY to hear that your DH was in the hospital. I hope his recovery is going well. It's very difficult to be a caregiver (I was my Mom's) but there is satisfaction knowing that you are doing, and have done a caring thing for a person who needs it. I wish you and the hubby all the best.

It's wonderful that he's out of the hospital! He must be so pleased to be at home in private, familiar surroundings, and I imagine it might lessen your burden a bit if you don't have to make the trek to the hospital so often. He sounds so genki in spirit, so positive and forward-looking. I really admire both your attitudes, as I often tend toward the negative myself. The fact that you see your "double life" as a welcome challenge instead of feeling overwhelmed--that's such a good example for me, as I might have to face the same thing if my mother-in-law comes to live with us in Kobe, as my husband hopes. I'm anxious about the future, as I don't want to quit my job and do only caretaking, but you give me hope!

I hope things continue to go smoothly and the number of pickles and scrapes goes down!

I’m glad that your husband is home again, and that your teaching responsibilities will be a bit less next year. Are your children close enough that, they can help with some of the caregiving? I worry about your health with all this extra stress.

As a caregiver, “staying sane and balanced” really equates to self-care, doesn’t it?! So glad that DH finally returned home and that the two of you are negotiating this post hospital return to normalcy and independence, one day at a time. Take care.... emoticon

What a lot you have on your plate! I am so glad you experience teaching as a balance to caregiving, and not an additional burden. Hang in there, the weekend is coming!
