I Triumphed Over Adversity!

Sunday, August 12, 2018

Today was one of those run-constantly days that I haven't had since I left teaching!

I got up early (for me, anyway) so that I could shower and eat before going to mass. Breakfast was rushed because I needed time to brush my teeth and put on my makeup afterward. I got to mass with just a couple of minutes to spare.

After mass today, my newest family member was baptized. My husband's cousin and her husband have been trying for years to have a baby. That didn't seem to be working, so they started trying to adopt a baby. There have been a couple of false starts to that so far.

Then last year she discovered she has cancer. Between trips back and forth to M.D. Anderson, and trying this trial drug and that one, she finally got some good news 2 weeks ago. Her tumor is shrinking rapidly! (Within the family, we believe God is intervening.) Two hours after getting that good news, she got the phone call that she never thought would come: a baby was available! They flew back home immediately and dashed to the hospital. Two days later they brought Ella Grace home.

So - back to my day. Mass at 9 a.m. Baptism at 10:15 a.m. I was back home a little after 11 a.m. Relaxed a little, ate some lunch. Then it was time to go to the baby shower that started at 2 p.m. I had eaten a good bit at lunch since I was pretty sure there would be nothing keto available at a baby shower! And I was almost right. Loads of cake, cupcakes, pastries, meatballs in BBQ sauce, colas, brownies...you get the picture. And then she put out a vegetable tray. And I noticed that next to the iced down bottles of soft drinks, there some bottles of Dasani water sitting on the counter. So I put myself some cucumber slices and a cauliflower piece and a broccoli piece and 3 tiny baby carrots on a plate with one tbsp. of ranch dip. And I drank two of those bottles of water.

After my gift had been opened, I made my good-byes to my husband's cousin (the grandmother of the new baby) and headed to the house. As I pulled up, I noticed that I had one hour until the gym closed. So I rushed inside, changed my clothes, got my water bottle ready, put on my shoes, and dashed off to the gym to get in a walk workout!

So I triumphed over the food hurdle at the shower, avoided the sugary drink traps, and even managed to get some exercise today! (I sill had 18 net carbs too many today, but I'm getting closer!)

    Yeah, it’s those carrots.

Good for you! I have been working on cutting back on dairy, and I kept to my carb limit, but I did have a bit of cream. I got a well-wrapped low carb burger at Hardee’s (lettuce in place if the bun) and avoided the diet soda that was pitched to me.

You have to tell them no ketchup, though, or they will put it in.
