I've been waiting to write this blog until I had answers for my poor son's knee.
We took a 2 week vacation to Las Vegas in July. My son (DS) had a martial arts conference and tournament during the first week. The day of the tournament didn't start out very well. In my son's weapons forms ring, one of the black belts broke his tibia when he landed from doing a flip. The next competition was for traditional forms, this was where DS was injured.
On the first Saturday of our vacation, DS hurt his knee doing a flying jump kick. It's called a butterfly kick. He was moving so quickly that the momentum caused his leg to turn too much and damaged his knee. We took him to the ER because he couldn't stand on the leg. They only ran x-rays which showed no broken bones and that the knee was still in the proper place. They gave him a knee immobilizer, crutches and prescription meds.
I called his doctor on Monday to see if I needed a referral to call an orthopedic group. I called the "ortho" group and explained the situation to them. I was told to keep his knee elevated and iced. I had an appointment to see them on 8/10.
We arrived home on 8/23. Hubby and I took DS to a walk-in orthopedic clinic that day. It's run by the same group as the 8/10 appointment was with. When we left there, we were told he had most likely torn at least 1 ligament. They scheduled an MRI for 7/26. We had our appointment cancelled for 8/10 and given an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon on 8/1.
DS doesn't do anything half way... He torn his ACL, MCL and outer meniscus. He has surgery scheduled for 9/4. He starts PT on Monday to try to heal the MCL. We have another appointment with the surgeon on 8/15 to check on DS's mobility and knee swelling.
Needless to say this was the worst vacation I've ever had! Between DS's injury and having my parents with me, I was being torn in many directions. DS wanted to stay in the room and keep his knee up. Mom, Dad and hubby wanted to go see the sights, visit with family and gamble. Anytime we left the timeshare to go anywhere, my Dad's scooter and DS's wheelchair needed to get loaded into the minivan. My hubby would conveniently disappear when loading needed to be done. Mom helped with the bottom of the scooter but I loaded all the rest. (DS usually loaded Papa's scooter into the van by himself).
I am so glad the month of July is over! I have been off-track for most of the month and letting my 5% challenge teammates down. GO STARFISH! I will do better for myself, my family and my team! Today, I step back on track!
This Wednesday I thought it was Friday. That's how confused I've been this week.
Thank you for allowing me to vent! Have a wonderful August!
