Progress - One Foot In Front Of The Other

Tuesday, July 31, 2018

About six weeks ago, I joined the Y near me. I tried their Silver Sneakers Circuit Training class exactly twice and was flattened. Never one to accept failure, I changed classes and was able to do the Silver Sneakers Classic at my old Y. I'm happy to report that I have made enough progress that today, I added a second weekly Silver Sneakers Classic class. This one has a different instructor and is slightly more challenging. I was able to do quite a number of simple modifications, in range of motion, and I still completed the class. When my back started speaking to me, I simply completed the movement from a seated position. (I have difficulty standing in the same place for minutes on end). So, I rested when necessary and did my thing. I was very pleased with myself by the end of the class.

How is this a change for me? Before I broke the vertebrae in my back, I would have pushed myself to remain standing despite the pain. As I heal, pushing myself in that way is not an option. A friend wanted me to go for coffee and a visit after class. I declined. Maybe sometime in the future, I will be able to do a bunch of additional activities after exercising, but not now. For today, I drove to the bank, drove back to my own area, went to the grocery store for a few items and went home to rest (after a nice warm shower). My friend was disappointed in me, I know.

This is the behavior that is different. I put myself up there at the top of the list and refused to be shamed into doing something that was not in my best interest. The cost to me physically was too much for now. Period. So for the foreseeable future, I will put one foot carefully in front of the other. When I'm tired, I will stop and rest.

    emoticon emoticon on your progress.

Don't ever feel guilty saying no to others because of wanting to do something for yourself. There are times you need to put yourself first. emoticon

Good for you! Oh, how I hear you.

I was simply more active and took one purposeful walk and I am paying for it. I have not been to the gym in weeks. We have to put ourselves first.

You are the EXAMPLE for me! I admire how much you understand about yourself and setting what is reasonable but also achievable while making it a challenge. When things don't go to plan, you change the plan. You have back up plans, branches off the main plan, adjustments that you are willing to try and you still go forward.

Friend you ROCK IT. You ROCK life. Thank you for your wisdom.

Congratulations on your progress. I too fractured my spine some years ago and I'm joyfully, getting aerobic exercise and weight lifting in now.
