The Myth of Motivated/Being Productive

While "Tuesdays at the Castle" by Jessica Day George still reins supreme, I do have a new favorite book.Well, it is more like a favorite concept. I'll try to explain. I've been listening to "The 5 Second Rule" by Mel Robbins through I think I'm in the middle of my fourth time through it, if not more. I want to keep it on my mind. In the book Mel explains that there is this myth that you have to be fully motivated to do something. The trick isn't feeling motivated, it is forcing yourself to just do it.

The tool/technique is to count backwards from 5 to 1 (1 to 5 doesn't work the same) then force yourself to move, to just start because it takes less energy to keep going than it does to start. As stupid as this sounds, it works! There is even science to back it up, but you'll have to read the book to find that out. Science is not my strong point to be sure!

I've mainly been using the rule to get myself out of bed and to use the treadmill. Speaking of the treadmill, it is in the office now so I've been able to use it more. That's a good thing because FanX (formerly Salt Lake Comic Con) is coming up fast so I really need to get my walking endurance built up. On the treadmill, I can read, watch Doctor Who, play games, etc. while I walk so I end up walking longer and not getting bored so easily. Plus, the treadmill forces me to stay at a good pace because I'm not slowing down to focus more on my second task (playing games, reading, etc.). I am taking a break from exercise today, but I will be back on the treadmill tomorrow.

I don't even remember how I stumbled on her channel, but she mentioned the book on a couple of her videos. She also taught me about calendar blocking. Her videos are great if you want to learn how to be more productive and go after the life that you want. I've been using calendar blocking for about a week, maybe more, now. I get so much more done! I would make a to-do list every day, but rarely get even half of it done. Since I began calendar blocking, I have accomplished so much more! I still make a to-do list then use it to schedule my day. Since my life is in flux so much, I haven't managed to fully stick with the schedule, but I have a period of time in the afternoon where I eat lunch and either rest or catch up on what I've missed.

Well, this blog has gotten too long so I'm going to quit here. I just wanted to share my discoveries (The 5 Second Rule and AmyTV) with the world. I hope you all have a great day!

    I really like the concept of the 5 second rule! Sounds like it would work better than my old standby -- one, two, three! I believe that as soon as my system normalizes that I'll look into reading that and putting it into practice! I'm very glad you shared!

    Thanks for the link to AmyTV! I will check her out. I appreciate short videos like hers. I need to learn the calendar blocking technique too - so I will be looking for that.

    The 5-second rule sounds like a great tip for getting more exercise into your day. It's like a countdown to liftoff! I'll definitely remember that one.

    I thought of you as we drove through SLC yesterday. We had originally planned to get back home on Wednesday, but because of the fires in California, we left a day early and made it home in 2 days instead of 3. Everything is fine here, but it is incredibly smoky and not safe to be outside for long periods. We are glad to be home!

    Thanks for sharing - I am always interested in learning new ways to improve especially getting past procrastination and being more productive. I need to get into the treadmill routine again, but cannot seem to get moving in the mornings.
