Eat Sitting Down

Yesterday, while at Costco, I sampled and it was not until I returned home that I realized I ate without giving it much thought. One of the reason for eating sitting down is to be more conscious of everything you eat.

"Since you'll be eating less food, it's important to see all of it spread in front of you at meal or snack time..." ~~ since I am eating a whole food plant based way of eating I find that I can eat a lot of food and if I keep it so most of the foods are less calorie dense I can eat a lot. The plans I am following all say to eat until satisfied, not stuffed. But as I learned from yesterday's sampling episode, if I eat sitting down I am aware of what and how much I am eating.

For me, it is too easy to shovel in the food without giving it much thought. So, I guess I will need to pay extra attention to the day that the exercise is to eat mindfully.

I sometimes walk up to the cart if something looks interesting, but I always read the label before taking anything - it there's oil or sugar or salt in the first 5 ingredients, non-whole-grain flour, anything not a plant, or anything I can't pronounce, I just put it back and say, "Sorry, I can't eat this."

Avoid the sample carts; I sometimes wonder as to the safety of the products offered. Sell, sell, sell is the name of their game!

Although I have never read the Beck Diet Solution, I have made rules for myself that worked well. When I was teaching, I had a rule, "I don't eat at faculty meetings." We had them in the AM before school, and often there were giant cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, and other saboteurs of healthy eating. But my rule worked; I always ate breakfast at home before my commute, so I wasn't hungry. Sadly elementary faculties are noticeably peopled with overweight and obese individuals - stressed, overworked, and under exercised.

Now I have a rule, "I don't eat free samples of anything at Costco, even healthful foods." I find it a disgusting marketing practice, and feel badly when I see young children encouraged by parents to partake.
