Plateaus. We hear about them. We have experienced them. And we dread them. Maybe it’s time to embrace them. Hear me out on this one.
Have you ever considered that plateaus may be helpful? That instead of marching from your start weight to your goal weight in one amazing linear journey, maybe it should include some pit stops to enjoy the trip? I’ve used SP and a number of other weight loss/lifestyle changes to get my weight and health under control. Each time, I’d lose that initial 15 to 20 pounds or so - and then plateau. It was disheartening, after working so hard at eating right and exercising more.
This time, I embraced that plateau. I deliberately stayed at that weight for a month or so. It was freeing! It gave my brain time to wrap itself around the idea that this was the New Normal. It gave my body time to reset and adjust to the New Normal. No, I didn’t eat all the junk I wanted or pig out every day. I didn’t want to. What I did do was give myself permission to stay at that weight for as long as I felt comfortable there.
When I felt like this wasn’t the end of the journey, I revisited my SP goals and revised them. Calories went down and my goal for exercise minutes went up. And I continued on my merry way, losing weight again. Until I hit the next plateau. For me, there’s something about going into numbers that end with 9. 179. 169. 159. You get the picture. So my plateaus have been at numbers that end in 0. 170. 160. 150. So I expect that every time I’m inching toward a number that ends in 9, I’ll be taking a breather from expecting to take more pounds off.
I haven’t explored any research on weight loss and plateaus. But for me, this works. It gives me a chance to adjust to a new normal, which seems to make it easier when I rev back up for weight loss. My brain thanks me for this. And I think my body does too.
