An experiment begins

Monday, July 23, 2018

My sleep has been disordered for a while now. I have been resisting taking anything for it besides vitamin therapy as I despise feeling foggy or sedated when I wake up in the morning. (I spent most of my 20s and early 30s in a medication fog, so I refuse to go back there!). A number of people of given anecdotal information on melatonin however, and after discussions with my doctor and pharmacist I decided to give it a try... now, I have only taken it one night, and I am taking a fairly low dose, but I did sleep about one hour longer, and without waking up repeatedly.... and I was able to wake up fairly clear headed this morning (as much as any morning...). So, I think I will continue this experiment. It is a simple enough solution if it really works. I am just not sure if I simply reached a point of total exhaustion... and that’s why I slept, or if the melatonin truly had the desired effect? Hence the need to continue the experiment. It did sort of mess with my normal 3am run schedule, as I slept until 4am! But I had decided last night to take this morning off from the more intense cardio, so it’s all good. Rest days (or active recovery days) are important too! Sometimes I have to remind myself of that fact... lol... We have a chance of pop up thunderstorms today from midday through the evening. No guarantees, just a 50 percent chance most of the day... we could use more rain. Today is my best friend’s birthday. She is having a small party (basically her family and me), and the menu is pizza. Ummm... pizza is addictive for me... I can’t eat just one slice... I cannot. I have tried. So I will plan my food for the day accordingly... knowing I have this coming up tonight. Really I should probably just eat the toppings and skip the crust entirely, but pizza is one instance when I actually enjoy bread... mmmmmm, yummy... makes me smile. That reminds me... I need to wrap her presents! Eeep! Slacker here! Gotta go do that now. Hope y’all have a great day!

I use melatonin to sleep also, but what really started making a difference in my ability to sleep is shutting down all sources of blue light and going with yellow lights and red lights the last couple of hours before bedtime (I have the colored lights in lamps around the house), and covering the tv, computer etc with a see-through red film. You can buy actual red covers from lowbluelights.com (expensive), but I just bought red clear wrapping paper and put a double layer over my devices. When I have to open the fridge to get my dogs meds then I put on deep amber sunglasses for that moment. Also, I have found that not eating too close to bedtime physically helps the body shut down for the night.

I don't know what it is about pizza, but I have to literally sit on my hands to stop myself after a couple slices. Then I hope everyone else will eat it all so I don't have to keep obsessing over it! Hope you did well.

I love pizza....dh seams to order it on Fridays if I work late and haven't prepared dinner. I know my mom has trouble sleeping and she takes a tea that she gets from Davids Tea called Mother's Little Helper. Not sure if you can find it online or if you have tthat shop where you are.

While I was still working, I wouldn’t buy pizza for the house. As soon as someone ordered in pizza at work, I was doomed!

I slept until 7:30, and put off walking the pups until th3 evening (we hit around 100 again). Well, it started pouring down rain from about 7:30pm. Oh, well, a rest day for me, my ankle & the pups. I need to get up in the morning & walk them!

I haven’t had a lot of luck with melatonin, but I didn’t use it consistently. Hope it works for you!

Hope the melatonin helps!! Mary Ann and I go to Youtube and listen to "The Honest Guys" guide to meditative sleep. It's helped me so much, 19 out of 20 nights all I need to do is a part of it,,,, breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 5, breathe out for 6. I do it and yawn the Second time, yawn. It's the signal to my brain time to shut off and I'm out within a few seconds. I to did the gamut of meds in my 30s/40s and never again!!!

Rest days or days of not as much or easier moving are so very important!! Congrats!!

    Yummmm pizza!!

Pizza is one of my definite downfalls. Enjoy the pizza and have no regrets. It's not like you have everyday. Know your limit and stick to it.

Interesting. My sleep specialist had me take a quarter mg around 6pm to tell my body to wake up earlier. (It is not supposed to make you sleepy, but is marketed that way for some reason.)

    Blessings on your health!

I think all pizza has a secret ingredient that dissolves portion control willpower. Oddly enough if I make homemade pizza, which is rare, I find I can eat a reasonable portion.

Keep us posted on the Melotonin experiment. I tried it only once years ago. I find I sleep great if I get 13,000 steps done that day.
