My new leather chair will be delivered this afternoon. It was in a half-price sale, then I told them they were charging me way too much on delivery since I live less than two miles from their store. The salesman reduced that amount as well. He knew I had been researching all over, so competition is way too stiff to quibble
. It is so sad that people are resorting to online shopping. They do not see that it is taking so many jobs from so many places. Big corporations delivering and storing from one big warehouse, leaving honest jobs from people who care about their jobs.. when you do this to a business, they cannot spend in other places, cannot pay taxes, so your taxes go up to make up the difference.
I buy one thing online because I cannot get it anywhere near my city. I always buy local, stay at mom-and-pop hotels/motels when I can.
People only look at what is directly in front of them. They do not actually sit and think of the consequences of their actions:small store closes, owners and employees leave town. Then another, another, until those left behind are getting tax increases to pay for big corporation tax breaks to move in. Walmart, art van, all of the big behemoth billionaires are taking the life-force out of communities and letting the people pay the price..literally.

Boy oh boy do I HEAR you on the online onslaught! We lose SO much business because people want things dropped off on their doorstep! I have a friend (well...she was...not so much now) who has a daughter who lives in Chicago. She is unabashed to brag that she gets her stuff delivered so that she doesn't have to walk up the stairs to her entry. Lazy much? emoticon

When we had our little cabin in N. Carolina I loved shopping in the little town. Such cute little gardening shops, sewing galleries, cute little restaurants, a nice little clothing store. All so charming. After a few years of going up there they were all gone. A massive Wal-Mart moved into town and wiped them out. I was SO sad to see this happen to all of those lovely hard working mom and pop owners.

Now it is happening to us here in Fl. Customers come in and tell me how much they love our store to browse and show off to their friends when they are in town. I tell them that after being there almost 9 years I'm really rethinking making the landlord rich year after year. I tell them that if they don't support the mom and pop stores they will have no place to go and browse. You can't make itn occasion to share with a friend on -line after all. emoticon

I live in a small town with a Walmart and not much else. The nearest decent shopping is 90 minutes away. So I buy a lot on Amazon. When there is a local store that offers unique things I can't get anywhere else, then I patronize them. But I won't pay more for the same item that Walmart sells just to support a business that isn't really trying to be successful. Progress requires change.

This is so true. Our UPS guys, is so over-worked that he doesn't know how much longer he can keep up the hours he has to work, just because people are to lazy to do their own shopping. He is in his 50's and can not afford to not have a job, and who is going to hire a 50 year old UPS driver? We as people are making our own demise. Like they say, "You don't know what you had, until it is Gone."

I agree with what you are saying. The big box stores can buy a large volume of an item that the Mom and Pop stores can't and then sell the item at a lower price than the Mom and Pop store. Sometimes, the small stores are put out of business.

I am glad you are getting your chair.

There is a post that appears on Facebook periodically about the value of supporting Mom 'n Pop businesses. I agree with your points!
