/pubmed/20501876/ The Bistek that I tried has a very sad beginning as it was a starvation food in Cuba. The true recipe you take the grapefruit pith dip it in egg, coat it with breadcrumbs with tons of garlic and fry it in lard. My healthier version used a 1/4 of a scoop of whey powder with garlic powder, dill weed and creole seasoning pan fried with Pam. My judgement? The initial bite was super, but you don’t want to linger chewing it as the bitter grapefruit taste does come up at the end. I will say it was a lot more filling than just an egg for only 30 calories more. I think next I will experiment using it grated in a salad which I think the natural flavors will work better with IMHO. The healthy benefits can’t be overlooked.
