Why the weight gain?

I wrote a longish entry that somehow got lost so I'll keep it short.
I've been watching my calories, carbs, and sugar, and managed to lose five pounds pretty quickly a few weeks ago, and then all the weight came back this week--even though my calories/carbs/sugar were basically unchanged (with the exception of some fast food on Monday). What gives? Maybe it's water retention and I know I'm not exercising enough (I just had minor surgery yesterday and am not supposed to exercise for a few days). But this is annoying.
I'm not going to go off the rails, and if anything, I'm just going to work harder...but what a pain!
