Tracking- even when you hate to track
Sunday, July 08, 2018
During my many years here on SP, the Tracker has been the one resource that has contributed most to my success in shedding excess weight.
By recording my food daily, I knew exactly how many calories, carbohydrates, and fats I consumed.
By recording my food daily, I could not 'forget' some of what I had eaten. I became much more conscious of EVERY morsel that went into my mouth.
By tracking my food daily, I discovered that my portion sizes had been much bigger than they should have been.
Most important of all, by tracking my food daily, and staying within my calorie limits, I knew that I was eating in a way that would lead to weight loss -- no matter what the scale had to say that day.
The truth is, though, that I never enjoyed tracking. It felt confining, and, of course, it was.
I like to have a more spontaneous and 'spur-of-the-moment' attitude toward food - and to life, in general.
( Note to self: The weight gain from this past year is the result of my spontaneity.)
Still, I have resisted tracking.
So, what have I done about it? I write down everything I eat in a little notebook that I carry in my handbag.
I find that I limit my intake, knowing that it will be recorded; I eat less because of this exercise.
And, not surprisingly, I remember many of the values and portion sizes of the foods I enjoy most.
So far this is working well for me.
No doubt I will in the future begin to use the SP Tracker again, because knowing the exact calorie count will GIVE ME MORE FREEDOM THAN I HAVE RIGHT NOW BY GUESSING AT IT.
That is when tracking won't seem restrictive or confining.
Rather, it will be liberating.
It won't be long now.....
