I received a message on Face Book the other day from the son of an old friend. "Please give me your phone number, I have something to tell you about Mom, and I don't want to write it here."
Mary used to live in our neighborhood, but she and her family had returned to her hometown in the midwest almost 30 years ago. We were both teachers, with sons about the same age, and we used to walk together on a regular basis. There was always lots of laughter during those walks.
We hadn't seen each other since her move, but we had exchanged cards and letters at first, then we had 'friended' each other on Face Book. I saw photos of her kids and grandkids, and she saw mine. She would occasionally comment on photos that I posted from our neighborhood or from the nature preserve behind our houses. We both had fond memories of our times together.
I quickly sent my phone number to her son. Then I went to her Face Book page.
It was as I had feared. Mary had passed on Friday.
A relative of hers made the announcement on her page.
And on her Face Book page, what was the last posting that Mary had made?
DON'T WAIT FOR THINGS TO GET EASIER, SIMPLER, OR BETTER.
LIFE WILL ALWAYS BE COMPLICATED.
LEARN TO BE HAPPY RIGHT NOW.
OTHERWISE, YOU'LL RUN OUT OF TIME.
It's a good message for all of us.
