May 18 Read Acts 8 Receiving the Holy Spirit

Friday, May 18, 2018

The debate has gone on for decades, perhaps even centuries as to when a believer receives the Holy Spirit. I'm sure that I won't end it today. This chapter is one reason for the continued discussion. The Samaritans accepted Jesus but there was no evidence of the Holy Spirit until the disciples laid on their hands. So many have concluded that laying on of hands is necessary. And many believe that the Spirit comes separately from salvation. I believe that we receive the Spirit as soon as we accept Christ. I also believe that God does things the way that He wants to for His reasons. In this case, the Samaritans were typically hated by the Jews. The gospel of Jesus needs to go to all peoples in all places and prejudices needed to be overcome. There are several recorded incidents where the Spirit only came when apostles were present, and I think probably more that are not recorded. Perhaps God did this to show His disciples that indeed this salvation is for all.
