Willingness and Walking
Thursday, May 17, 2018
As it gets hotter here and the drought continues, it is getting ridiculously hot outside by noon. For May, it's pretty insane (already over 100 most days). I had gotten very happily accustomed to a half hour walk every day at lunch, but walking in this heat has been less appealing!
I do work on a college campus, so there are plenty of buildings and pathways around me. I initially started out only walking hallways in my own building, so it is not totally unfamiliar to me. And I do still take my morning walk outside, wandering pathways around buildings and enjoying the glorious greenery, trees, squirrels and birds all around me. Morning walks are very meditative for me, plus, hey, exercise!
However, I wanted a longer "track" now for my noon walk, and indoors is appealing again in the heat. Lucky for me, the library is across the street and just under a block away, and it's six stories!! After some exploration, I've discovered I can elevator up to the top floor (no, I'm not up to climbing six consecutive flights of stairs just yet), and walk my "indoor track" through each story, taking the stairs on the way down. I've always loved libraries, and it's fun to see all the books, and at noon in the summer, fewer students in the study carrels (to offend with the fact that my walking partner and I like to chat while we walk!)
And on weekend mornings, I walk all over my neighborhood, having found two "tracks" or paths that fit my half hour. Despite a couple of aggressive dogs that would really like to come through the fence at me, it's an inspiring and uplifting thing for me to walk every day! I feel SO MUCH BETTER when I don't miss a single day!
For the summer I truly feel like I have the best of both worlds, indoor and outdoor walking, stairs, terrain, changes in scenery!! It's awesome.
What do you do to change it up?
