There are Only 2 Questions to Ask

So often I live in the past and in the future. When an opportunity comes my way I overthink the whole thing. What if this? What if that? How will this____? How will that____? But these questions cannot ever be answered, unless a person is psychic. But even then, there are a multitude of endless possibilities that can occur and then a multitude of possibilities for each of those. So why do I do that? If it is futile, and it is, why do I waste my time doing that?

Sometimes in life it is good to just go with the flow. The question can be: does this enhance my life? If yes, then make it happen. Maybe something will have to be scheduled out for a future moment, maybe it can happen right now. But life enhancing opportunities should always be taken.

That is how it is with exercise. Everyday most of us have 20 minutes we could give to exercise. We hear around here at Spark People that we can start with as few as 10 minutes at a time. If we take our 20 minute period and tell ourselves we only have to do 10 minutes and then we get a 10 minutes break to ourselves…well what a treat!!!

We, I , don’t have to think about tomorrow or next week. It is ok to just say “hmm I have 20 or 30 minutes right now.” Then take a walk up the street for 5 minutes and back. Do some arm exercises with 2 Gatorade bottles followed by some leg lifts seated or from the floor.

What will happen first is you and I will experience a sense of pride that we took time to do something towards our health. We will be amazed how quick the time came and went. We will be excited to get 10 minutes in when tomorrow arrives and we notice we have time again. Okay, maybe we won’t be excited the second day—but we will know it is possible to do and then our next question will be : Why not?

SO our two questions for exercise are:
Is it life enhancing?

Then, why not?

Pretty simple. It doesn’t need to be analyzed into the future. No need to rehearse the past where we quit. This is the only day that counts.

Do you have 20 minutes? Put 10 of them into YOU! And your future!

    I'm just getting back into a walking routine after being pretty sedentary over the last several years. Started walking 10 mins and decided later during the day, hmmm... I have time for another 10 mins and ended up walking three times that day followed by stretching. Now I'm up to 20 -30 minutes at a time, twice a day and it's done much for my self esteem. It's been over two mos since you've written this blog and I hope you're doing well. Keep up the good work.

    It was starting with the 10 minute that did it for me. No reason to not take a short walk and as I did that I added a few more 10 minute walks. Even now not matter what I tell myself "I can do 10 minutes" and never has that no led to a longer walk or workout.

    i've been splitting my lunch so that i get a 20 minute aerobics workout in now.... every little bit counts and it helps to energize me for the 2nd half of my day.

    Using 10 minutes to dither about exercise vs using same 10 minutes to exrcise...sounds like me! Good advice!

    I agree sometimes it is hard to get out of our heads. What if , what if. We can't change the past so look forward. What we do today does affect our future. When an opportunity of some kind pops up I ask myself if I do this will it bring me closer to any of my goals. Exercise is all ways a yes. Exercise is a great mood lifter so we can feel its effects today, but we might not see the effect of a toned body till a future time. Great Blog!
