Setbacks and motivation

Thursday, May 03, 2018

It's been a while since I've reported in but I'm doing pretty well. Late last summer I had a workout injury -- a torn meniscus from trying to follow along with a whippersnapper yoga teacher instead of going at my own pace and listening to my body. Walking has always been my workout of choice and sadly I haven't been able to go at a rate that is enough to get my heart rate up since then. I tried again in the early winter when I was starting to feel better and got a shin splint on my other leg. Why not. Ha!

The good news is, while I did gain, it was a minimal gain -- I have fluctuated with the same 5 lbs. for about six months now. I'm thrilled, because in the past when I haven't been able to work out, I found myself gaining 20 or 30 lbs. I am treating this as a victory.

This morning I realized my glucose was also creeping up and the number on the scale was just a pound or two over what I consider the top of my range. That was it. Something snapped in me and I knew what I needed to do so here I am. I've got a couple strategies for keeping active since at this time walking at a good speed is still not an option -- slower paced yoga so I can focus on form, body-weight resistance exercises, and my trusty stationary bike.

Work right now is very stressful, and I have some projects going on at home as well so I won't be socializing too much, but I'll definitely be around more than I have been. Wishing you all well -- let's make it a healthy day!
