Ack! A bloody mess...

Saturday, April 28, 2018

My dad and I were dog sitting Tigan’s new pup today and Cooper and Sweet Pea were playing with her frisbee on the other side of the house when I heard a yelp, but no other indication of distress, and they kept playing... until I noticed the pools and smears of blood that Sweet Pea was leaving behind her! We separated the dogs, examined her paw, and ascertained that she had ripped out a nail... of course, being after noon on a Saturday all the vets were closed, except the “emergency vet” an hourlong drive away... after some phone calls we took her to a local groomer who was willing to bandage it and recommend whether she should go to the vet today, or if it can wait until Monday morning... thankfully, it had mostly stopped bleeding by the time we got her to the groomer, and they said it could probably wait... unless... and they gave us a list of disturbing things to look for... and of course this happened when I was getting ready to go out for my run. lol. Isn’t that how it always works? Instead, I spent two hours tending the poor, injured pup. I was going to spend the weekend at my dad’s, but the Cooper-dog was being a pest to Sweet Pea, so I figured it was best to bring him home until that time she feels better. He snuggles with me, my dad, and another niece or two, but he doesn’t have much empathy for anyone else as far as I can see. Pretty much a one woman dog! My downstairs neighbors are horrible. Today, they were “loud” enough that I had to turn my headphones up... to the point I couldn’t hear my landline ringing.

Poor baby! My littlest chihuahua has tiny feet with long nails - all very dark colored. She needs a trim, but the only time I tried, she screamed like I was cutting off her foot. Being a very small dog, her higher pitch can call bats to the house, as well as piercing my eardrums!

Poor baby! So scary when they just can't stop bleeding.

I made a terrible mistake the first time I tried to trim Addie Shanti's nails, and quicked the very first one I tried. I could not *believe* how much blood there was from a centimeter of mistake! Ugh, I was just new at it and didn't understand how long the quick could grow with the claw.

I could not stop weeping after that first yip sound she made, had to put her in her crate because she was tracking blood every step. Laura left work to get styptic powder and bring it home, of course that worked right away. So devastating to hurt a beloved pet. And every time she feels pain, she immediately starts wagging and apologizing with her tail low. Oh, my heart.

Sweet puppies, they are made of forgiveness. May they be safe and well.

Ahh poor pup...but having been thru that..well unless it gets some nasty bugs growing ..should be ok. Kinda like one of us ripping off a fingernail. Just painful for sure.
