4.24.18 One foot in front of the other

I am so enjoying this beautiful weather. That is the thing about living where there are four seasons- a new appreciation for good weather! This winter was brutal, mostly because I was unaccustomed to winter. Since living in Alaska, I hadn't been in cold country - I left there in 1999.

Things I have learned or relearned:
-It is easier to put on more clothes, as opposed to the 112 degrees where you can only take off so much- LOL.
-A good snow scraper is worth its weight in gold! I have an SUV and had to get one with a long handle so I could reach everything.
-I don't have to shovel snow- maintenance does it for me. If not, then stay home until the snow melts!!
The trees are leafing out and the daffodils are popped up! The squirrels are extra active and Ringo's favorite pastime is trying to catch them. It is funny to watch his routine. I take him out and he runs to the tree, stands on his hind legs to see if McFly is there.

I had a set back and allowed myself to start smoking- but I have a new Quit date of May 1, have a quit counselor who gave me tons of good advice and of course my sister Deb who is on the same journey, but a different route. I am going to try the patches, even though I have tape sensitivity, I think some hydrocortisone cream will help. In the process of getting ready for the BIG QUIT, I have been doing some mini-quits. As per usual I will be taking it one day at a time. I have my Daily Why's on my vision board. One of the strategies I discussed with the QUIT coach was the 4 D's. Distract, drink water, deep breath and delay. She suggested that using a delay strategy was actually giving myself permission to have a smoke, and that is when she suggested the mini-quit. This applies to weight loss also, or at least in my case it does.

I am still feathering my nest- the basics are in place. I just got a new chair for my desk. It is a beautiful dark teal upholstered dining chair. It makes me sit straighter, so the sit bones are a bit cranky at the moment, but since the desk is in the living room, it looks so much nicer than an office chair. This month's acquisition will be patio chairs and a table, and a hanging flower basket. There are some things popping up in my little garden, I really can't identify them yet, but I think it may be a peony! Anticipation!! I am thinking of doing a garden tower with lettuces and salad makings. In any event I will check out the local nurseries shortly,

I cancelled my gym membership and am using You Tube and Prime videos. So far I am pretty impressed. I am hooked on Ann Smith Senior Fitness Collection. She is 80 years old and is amazing! Ringo of course thinks when I am down on the floor, it is play time.

My last physical therapy appointment is this week. I have full range of motion in the shoulder again and although not pain fee, at least it is manageable. I am grateful for that!
The money I am not spending on gym memberships will pay for regular massages. All in all, given that I have fibromyalgia, I am blessed to be as limber and active as I am. I am grateful for Ringo, he keeps me active.

I am holding my own with the weight journey. I haven't gained! This week the new round of BLC starts and I am ready. The last week the blood sugars and BP have been really good readings- again I am thankful!

One of my goals for 2018 was to gain control of my finances. emoticon Done! My credit score is great and with the extra from my part time job, I actually have some $ in savings! Not smoking will help that also. I am not going to beat myself up for what has happened previously, but I am not going to stay in the rut! When I first started savings, it was with the idea of relocating back to Tuscon, but now I am not so sure. I am beginning to make friends, and I do love this apartment so much, mostly the people. Perhaps I will just fly to Tucson a couple of times a year for a much needed winter break. Now that I have winter gear it isn't that bad! LOL


I am still ordering my groceries online and having them delivered. That is one of my weight loss strategies. If it isn't in the house I can't eat it! In order to do that I have to plan my meals. It is also an opportunity to read the nutritional labels. I believe I actually save money by doing this. If I spend $100 the delivery is free, and the impulse items don't jump into the grocery cart. Since I can't seem to summon up a lot of willpower, I need to use whatever external tools are available to me.

I am an active member of the Omaha Baby Boomers Breakfast Club- it meets once a month and that is where I have met most of my new friends. It is a slow process when you are older. I treasure my old friends very much and it is comforting to know they are just a phone call or a post away. SP friends are my support and joy also. Even though I haven't met them face to face, I feel I know them better than some of my family members.

Time to go and enjoy the sunshine! Thought For The Day – Don’t put a coin in the jukebox if you can’t dance to the tune.

    There are days that I really just want to curl up somewhere and have someone tell me that everything will be OK--- but---it's not going to happen, and really I know all will be well if I just keep plugging away--LOL--

    Wow you have so much going on. Good for you for quitting smoking! I'm going to watch your progress because I haven't been successful yet. Good for you on the finances - it takes as much patience as losing weight and as much work tracking and stuff.

    You always seem to be so positive and probably that is what attracts people to you. Your idea about a chair, exercise videos, and dropping the gym membership tell me that you don't settle for anything. Too often, I do.

    I had to laugh about Ringo and the squirrels. Bayau goes up the outside basement steps and then slowly sneaks around the side of the pool hoping there is an animal in our yard.

    Nebraska was the coldest state we traveled through to go to Wyoming last year for Thanksgiving. I went to a Walmart and bought a winter coat because of the cutting wind. The zipper gave out once I got it home and it was returned for a refund.

    I hope the quitting of smoking goes well for you. My son vaped for awhile, but is back to cigarettes and I know they are very expensive.

    Sounds as if everything is heading in the right direction, and I think it's your good, hardworking, hopeful attitude that's making things go well. It's great that you've started to make friends in your new location, to the point that you're thinking about staying. And great that you've found some good things for your apartment and look forward to finding more. Furnishing an apartment or house is fun! The online exercise, too! I haven't looked outside the Spark exercise videos, but I hear there's a wealth of exercise opportunities--all free! And you can do it in the privacy of your own home, and no back-and-forth to the gym!

    I hope that plant is a peony! I got my first peony last year. I know hardly anything about flowers so couldn't believe that what looked like a shriveled up stick would grow into a lovely bush that would burst forth in bloom. But it did! It was so exciting to watch. The day before yesterday, the most magnificent yellow blossom made its debut, and I was over the moon! Let us know if it's a peony!

    So glad to hear how well you are doing - after all your set-backs, you have bounced back amazingly well. It sounds like you are very contented where you are, and for now that is awesome. Definitely stick to that quit date - you will be amazed at the difference in your health as well as your pocketbook! I'm here cheering you on every step of the way although it sounds like you are doing doing pretty darn well being your own cheerleader. Love and hugs for a special person!!

    Thanks for the update. I think you are doing great! It must be kind of fun fixing up the apartment just for you; I've never been able to do even one room without input....I'm sure you remember that.

    Anyway, I really like your Quit plan and I think I will borrow the premise to use on something I'm working on. I've never smoked and don't drink but we all have bad habits.

    Spark TV lists dozens of great workout videos. I really like them because they run anywhere from 5 minutes to 45 minutes and you can always find one that is just long enough for your day. I especially like the seated core exercises and the Everyday workouts. You are certainly right about the gym memberships; that money adds up - I hope you won't miss friends you have met there.
