Volunteer Recognition Day

Monday, April 16, 2018

This is our assignment for the Aspire and Inspire sparkteam: April 20th is Volunteer Recognition Day. Volunteer Recognition Day honors the legions of volunteers who dedicate themselves to causes and helping others, making big and small differences in people’s lives. In what ways have you volunteered your time and effort over the years? Are there ways you look forward to volunteering in the future?

When I was in high school and college I volunteered a pretty good amount. Then I became a teacher, and my volunteering definitely decreased. There was just too much to do for my job. Now that I’m not teaching, I have time to volunteer again. Currently I volunteer in my church library one morning a week. As a volunteer, I do things like check in and shelve books, process new books, organize the card catalog, etc.

One volunteer I would like to recognize for Volunteer Recognition Day is my father. At 78 years old, he volunteers at the hospital from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. every Wednesday. He works in the Outpatient Surgery waiting room, greeting patients and then escorting them to their various destinations within the hospital. This also involves pushing wheelchairs sometimes. He is very friendly and outgoing, and he does what he can to help patients not be so nervous about their surgery.

It's wonderful you can volunteer again. I know I would enjoy working in a library. Your dad sounds like really great guy. I'm sure he helps people to feel calmer and not so anxious when they come to the hospital for surgery.

I’m like you were - too busy with teaching to do any volunteer work all those years. That is great that you now can volunteer again. I think I would enjoy working in a library, too. Sounds like your dad is a very special guy with the right outgoing personality to make patients feel calm when they come into the hospital before their surgery.

Oh, how I remember the long tiring days of teaching. While teaching is a rewarding job, it certainly doesn't leave time for much else. I'm not surprised you volunteer at the library since you love to read as much as you do. It's nice that you now have the time. That's wonderful that your father is involved like he is. I can understand you being proud of him.

I wish your dad could read your blog today. He would be honored I'm sure. Thank you for your spirit to volunteer. Looks like it was handed down through good example.
