Busting The Rust! 11th SparkVersary!

Sunday, April 15, 2018

Sending a shout-out to STRIVERONE for his recent invitation to one of the latest bike club spring rides I've ever had.

Three reasons why:

1) The weather's been atrociously cold and wet. Our spring has yet to really SPRING as we've been running 10-20 degrees below normal, which should be low 50s,

2) I have been allowing my private practice time to chew up my workout times (UGH!)

3) I have been plagued by serious arthritis pain in my right hip & knee. It makes climbing up or down steps excruciating as well as walking any amount of distance.

The good news is that I've been VERY steady with my weight and especially with limited workouts I knew it would be important to watch my food choices. Over the past several years I've fluctuated between 215-225 pounds, which while I might want better results, I can live with this level of fluctuation.

So going into bicycle riding season in probably the most de-conditioned state I've had in a long time has filled me with trepidation and anxiety. I really had to struggle to get myself out on this 40 mile bicycle ride.

STRIVERONE had the best wording in the write up for club members, referring to those of us who might be "rusty" and having just the ride to "bust the rust!" I knew I would kick myself relentlessly if I didn't push myself into the ride. I've recently bought a new, used car (Prius Two, 2014) and outfitted it with an awesome Thule bike rack as recommended by TEAMAGIS. It would be a CRIME not to use it, NO?!?

Amazingly, I found that my riding position on my bicycle did not aggravate my arthritis! I could ride relatively pain-free! My only handicap was being outta shape, lol. So while I was a far cry from leading the pack of riders, I did competently. I went into the ride prepping myself with a low, low bar of standards for judging and did my best to relax and enjoy the stupendous weather...it was actually like a SPRING DAY for a change! Go figure! Mid-50's sunshine and blue skies...! Woo hoo!

This has been a truly blessed year, having gotten married to such a beautiful, warm, loving wife and setting up a home together that has everything: where I live, work and shop is all within a 2-mile radius! How cool is THAT?!? Actually, this was how I brought on the arthritis: I said if everything is that close, why in the world am I DRIVING everywhere? So I undertook an effort to start walking as much as I could. Hello arthritis! Argh! I'm in physical therapy and learning some stretching moves to add to the ones I already faithfully do every morning for my back.

Recently we had the pleasure of hosting 4-A-HEALTHY-BMI and her partner for an overnight stay on their route to Pennsylvania to deliver some kayaks. We enjoyed a lovely evening together before sending them off the next morning.

Our SparkFamily sure is a wonderful place to hang out...! :-)

Keep on Sparking everyone!

Don

PS...forgot to mention that the ride was 40 Miles...not too shabby for my first ride!

Don, Happy to hear that you can ride relatively free of arthritis pain. I trust that you'll discover what supports you best and will do what you need to do.

Glad you enjoyed the ride and are enjoying a year of blessings. I understand work time chewing into workout time. That's been a challenge for me since August; but, particularly since November.

I was excited to read that you'd hosted 4A-HEALTHY-BMI and her partner. Wonderful.

Take care and always good to hear from you.

The weather here has been unseasonably cold as well. Right now freezing rain is falling and my garden is under 2 feet of snow and ice. But when a beautiful day happens, we sooooo appreciate it!
Glad to hear that you are meeting some Spark friends IRL! Cool!!

So so cool!! I find my arthritis well tolerates the elliptical --and XC skiing, although it was NOT a good winter for that here -- and I'm so very happy you can bust the rust and enjoy the bike!

You sound HAPPY!!! What a big change you made in your life and so worth it.

And great to see 4A-HEALTHY-BMI!! Another fave Sparkie!!
