2.5 weeks in and I feel fantastic!

Thursday, April 12, 2018

As the title says, I am thrilled with the results of a plant-based diet so far. I have so much more energy, my waist line is shrinking and my wallet is still in tact! I'm also very happy to say that I haven't had a drop of alcohol this whole time. There were many times in the first week when I was tempted to get a bottle but now that I'm 2.5 weeks into it, booze just doesn't cross my mind. In fact, I was thinking about what I was doing before this lifestyle change and honestly, I don't know how or even why I would start back up again. That being said, I'm not naive enough to think that one drink won't lead to another so I'll just avoid that whole ball of wax altogether.

Unfortunately, I still haven't started my evening fitness regime but it is in the works. I want to start this coming Monday so that is the goal that I'll aim for. I know that if I start burning calories then I'll start losing weight quicker. I'm going out for walks at lunch and I'm trying not to sit at my desk for so long during the day but I know that I can do more...and I will. One of the problems I have is I just don't have the drive after a busy day of work to jump around for 30-50 mins. I know that once I start, I'll naturally have more energy to repeat the next day but man is it hard. Perhaps that's an age thing. Regardless, it's time to stop making excuses and start lighting the fire under my butt.

On a separate note, my work colleague has decided to follow my lead with this plant-based diet and start doing it with his wife. It helps that his spouse has a meat and dairy allergy so she'll hopefully keep him on track by keeping the junk out of the house. I'm just happy to have someone listen to me about nutrition and I hope he sticks with it for the betterment of his health. He's not really overweight but he wants to shed some pounds so this is a great way for him to do it. Besides, when 1 person adopts a plant-based diet, that's less demand for meat and dairy in the supermarket and I'm very ok with that.

Interestingly, I started out on this journey with 1 goal in mind. Lose weight. But as I'm learning more and more about the plant-based diet and the vegan lifestyle, I'm becoming more and more concerned about the welfare of the planet and the animals used to feed it's human population. So now when I hear about people adopting a plant-based diet I think, "yay, we are one step closer to shutting down the meat industry". I've never agreed with the inhumane treatment of animals or the proverbial raping of our planet but now I feel like I'm making a difference, albeit small.

If you read this, there are tons of great documentaries out there on the many benefits of a plant-based diet so check them out. The classic are "Forks over Knives", "Food Inc" or "Cowspiracy" but some new ones like "What the health" and "Plant Pure Nation" are really helping the masses see how terrible the American diet really is for us.

Ok, time to wrap this up. I hope you have a great rest of your day!
