Mary of Bethany

Wednesday, March 28, 2018

Mary of Bethany was a woman who stepped out in faith to do things no woman would do in her day. Here is my monologue for Maundy Thursday,
Mary of Bethany:

I am Mary of Bethany. I am the sister of Martha and Lazarus.

Our family was honored when Jesus and his followers came to our home for dinner. One look into Jesus eyes, I was amazed by the love and compassion found in his greeting. Then I knew the Lord as more than just a teacher; with in my heart, I desperately wanted to spend time listening to his words, so I abandoned everything else; instead of helping to prepare the meal for our guests. I was embarrassed when Martha asked Jesus to tell me to help her. Instead of sending me to help, he told her that I had chosen the better thing. I was overcome with a mixture of feelings.

Time passed in the months that followed that night, then sadly my brother became so ill that Martha and I feared Lazarus was dying. We went sent messengers to inform Jesus that our brother was gravely ill. That we needed him to come quickly. Yet, he did not come in time to save our brother. I was heart broken. I could not believe that he would not come to help Lazarus. Did he not care about us at all?

When finally arrived three days had passed, since Lazarus was in the tomb. The mourners had been weeping, and I was beside myself with grief. What were Martha and I going to do without Lazarus. Neither of us were married or had hopes of finding a husband. What was to become of us?

In my anguish I could not go and face Jesus at first, this time Martha went to greet him. Finally, I reached the place where Jesus and the others were talking. Seeing him, I fell to his feet saying, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

I did not realize that all the mourners had followed me to see Jesus, then looking into my eyes glistening with tears, he said, show me were he lays. So, we lead Jesus to Lazarus’s tomb. I can not believe that after Jesus prayed, he asked for the tomb to be open.

But Martha, told Jesus, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

At this point, I could not believe what I was hearing, or seeing. The tomb was opened. Jesus, called for my brother to come out. Lazarus did come out and he was alive. I thought I must be dreaming. But it happened, Lazarus who I knew had died was alive.

Before the Passover, Jesus was invited a dinner at our home in Bethany. We wanted to honor and thank him for healing our brother, Lazarus. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Yet, I just could not do such a common task, instead, I took a jar of pure nard, an expensive perfume; I poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with my hair. The room was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Judas was so mad and challenged me for wasting such an expensive jar that could have been sold to the poor. I know it may have seemed foolish, but I wanted Jesus to know how much I loved him for all he had done for our family, and especially for giving me allowing me to sit at his feet listening to his words.

But Jesus told Judas. ‘Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me…Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her’.

Sadly, Judas was so anger and mean that he went to the Pharisees and Priests to betray Jesus for money. I cannot believe that my love, caused Judas to betray Jesus, with a kiss on the check.

I am so heartbroken, I just do not understand. How could Judas, do such a thing? What will happen to Jesus? My heart is filled with sorrow and fear.
Oh God, help us.

Just as Mary took chances, we too take chances to step in faith with God walking beside us to become a healthy human being.
Blessings for this Holy Wednesday. gia

I generally don't like people writing stories based after the Bible [because they add so much falsehood]; but, your very gifted.. and I enjoyed reading this.
