Bird Watching -- What a Hoot!

Monday, March 19, 2018

DH and I have been having great fun watching the birds who come to our bird feeders -- and scaring away the squirrels. I believe I have counted at least six pairs of blue jays and six pairs of cardinals. Numerous junkos, and lots chickadees. Some olive colored birds are flocking after the thistle and I am waffling between a couple of identities.

However, today, we had the common grackle showing up. What a beauty with his iridescent blue head gleaming in the sun. This is what they usually look like:

If you are feeding the birds, hope you are having fun watching, too!

We have different birds here...some beautiful wrens and sparrow species. There is a brilliant blue bird ..tis called fittingly a Mountain Bluebird...they only cruise by for a bit when Spring is on its way. But for a few days the fences look like there are bright blue decorations all over them. Then the swarms of blackbirds come.
I have a couple of crows that are challenging Ravens for size. We had some Magpies but they have not been back. Then the usual summer birds..the Robin and I have a Mockingbird that lands on my stove pipe and fills the house with his songs.
I think of the book Silent Spring sometimes and it is frightening to think we might have that eventually ...Rachel Carson was ahead of her time..she saw what was coming and tried her best to warn us.

Our primary birds during the winter are magpies, which have epic pecking order battles on our deck over the bread we've put out. Even though the calendar says it is spring today, the TRUE sign of spring is when the red-wing blackbirds and robins show up!

My mom used to have a bird feeder and loved to sit and watch the birds. Sounds like you have a great variety of birds to see and keep track of! Susan
