Another Beck Day

I'm working Beck (The Beck Diet Solution, Judith S. Beck, PhD) Day 11, learning the difference between hunger, desire, and cravings. Although I'm doing this exercise for the 7th or 8th time, I am planning to do it more conscientiously than ever. Today is a great day for it, no kids, no obligations. I can focus and plan to. I'm noting how I'm feeling and labeling it every half hour. Beck suggests "slight desire in mouth" and "emptiness and rumbling in stomach" as good responses.

My weight was again 135.4 this morning, and I could choose to be disappointed after my good eating day yesterday. But I'm in this for the long haul and trying to shift my thinking on "the number" in keeping with this philosophy.

    This day was an epiphany for me, because when I was reading comments about Beck from people who followed it, I would read things like "Hunger is not an emergency" and I would think, we should not be over riding what our body is telling us.
    Beck explains not all hunger is from your body needing food, there is also desire(gluttony) and cravings(emotional eating). We can manage the way we think, especially in regards to not eating when our body doesn't need food.
    Yay for having a day without distractions to dedicate to this important day !!

    Best wishes to you with the day 11 exercise. It has been a powerful one for me.

    It was intense cravings associated with oatmeal that led to my discovery that my carb intake had to be reduced and oatmeal did not serve my body and had to go.

    I've noticed that how I experience and respond to cravings has changed over the course of my journey.

    I used to consider any craving a bad thing. What I am learning is that cravings aren't necessarily a bad thing. A craving may actually be an indication from my body that I am in need of something that has been lacking rather than an indication of unbalance. Teasing out the difference can be a bit tricky. And, at this point, if I am in doubt, I do not feed it. If I have a sense that the craving is an indication of a true need then, I feed it.
