Walking the dog... pictures from around town

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

It's the last day of February and we already have Spring-like weather! I took the Cooper-dog out for his usual early morning walk and took pictures of some of the evidence...

The daffodils are poking their shy heads out of the grass...

The snowdrops are blooming...

And there is NO snow left...

Just for fun I took a few more pictures along our walk to show you what I see most mornings when I am walking the dog...

This marker stands in the cemetery maintained by the DAR... Unfortunately they have trouble staying ahead of the vandals and the ravages of time on the old grave markers...

The modern cemetery is next door/around the corner and there are some of the most interesting trees in there. Every Halloween they have horse drawn carriage rides after dark through the newer cemetery (Civil War and forward) with actors portraying various dignitaries and notable residents (and ghosts of course!) It's a little spooky, and very informative...

This is an example of one of the many larger houses that line one of the main streets of the village... they were needed when people had much larger families and took care of extended family in their homes... now most are multi-family dwellings.

And the big building, that looks like a school is the building I live in... it looks like a school, because it was once. It was converted and renovated into over 90 units for elderly and disabled in the 1970s(?) before that it had incarnations as the Women's Teachers' College, the Normal School, and the local Elementary and Middle School. It has an interesting history, including the original, wooden structure burning down in the early 1900s, killing several students and a maintenance worker (who are all buried together in the larger cemetery)... some say the building is haunted. Eh, who knows. I have never seen evidence, but who knows?

And in an aside I was rummaging around at my dad's and uncovered this old oak desk in the back storage room. I believe it is an antique, but it needs some love and repairs. It is beautiful though and VERY heavy. It needs new glass in the bookcase portion and one of the hinges on the drop front is damaged, but I think it is worth the effort to restore it. I might abscond with it once I am done. My dad has been trying to find a home for it with a family member since I dug it out (and dragged it out), so I don't think he would mind. He seemed to think it was Pony Express era...

So there's my morning (and a bonus pretty)... I hope you have a good day!
